A network search would be useful if the NIT (Network Information Table) contains information (Transponder Numbers, Symbol Rate, Modulation, FEC) about all of the transponders for a provider.

An example is Dish Network where the NIT and SDT (channel information) contains all the information so that that Dish Network receivers can easily lock onto all the channels without having to do a blind search.

For FTA receivers I think this feature is used in Europe.

Correct, you don't need to use it, your receiver's smart search or transponder search (as long as you have all of the transponders) will find everything without it.

Jim I thought you could use network scan for a particular transponder on a satellite that you already had channels on and scan it for any additional channels that may have been added without going blind search of the whole satellite.

The best sat to do a network scan is IA5/T5/G25 whatever the hell its called.
The globecast transponders will log all TP's regardless if its in the box or not. I think the RR Sat ones on there do that too.

That is handy when you have a box without blind scan :)
