No, the unions job is not be doctors. The players NEW the side effects or what COULD happen...so because there was no rule in MLB, they went ahead anyway.

This is the part that sounds really bizarre. The players knew the medical dangers, but went ahead anyway because MLB was powerless to stop them???

exactly. The union's job is not to warn them of the MEDICAL side affects as much as the LEGAL ramifications of what could or could not happen.

I'm not disagreeing, but it's totally bizarre a union would do nothing to try to protect their members from occupational illnesses or tragedies. What legal ramifications did the union discuss with their members?

Then only legal ramifications I could think of is that UNLESS perscribed by a doctor, steroids are illegal. I mean, I am not a lawyer, but unless I am wrong, you cannot get busted once you already have it in your system.
