Does a slimline 5 with a single wire output need a switch (the kind that have the six sat inputs and 3 legacy ports) between the lnb and the 4 way splitter or do I just connect the splitter to the lnb.

Can't say I've ever seen a red splitter for D*. Unless you mean the Holland splitter? If it is, then that's just a regular old 4 way splitter. The SWiM splitters have a bright green label, and Port 1 has a red insulator (indicates where the power injector gets connected).

The one I have has one red in port, one red out port and three white out ports. It has SWS-4, 2-2150 MHz on the label. It has an aluminum housing. I think it might be an older style splitter that is no longer sold.

Yeah it looks to be the older version but should still work. It looks to be spec'd the same as the SPLIT-4, so you should be good. (Though Ray mentioned MRV might be affected, but since MRV operates well within the frequency range of the splitter, it should be ok)
