i`m thinking of getting a slingbox for when i`m away from home.does the ird need to remain on all the time?

No, you can set it up any way....Workes great, make sure you get the cable for it that fits the receiver, using hdmi some stuff gets blocked.

yeah got it all setup.i just hope i have enough download speed where i am in mexico.
