While police were arresting Storey, Arenas got out of a vehicle and walked toward the arresting officers. According to reports, an officer told Arenas to get back in his vehicle, but he refused............he said, "You can't arrest me. I'm a basketball player. I play for the Washington Wizards......

Teammates hell; do the right thing and obey the police; obey the law. Stay out of jail to be able to help your teammate by bailing his dumb ass out, not by getting thrown in as well. Here's a novel idea; be a good teammate and get his ass out of the street as police asked BEFORE he gets you both arrested! When will all these young guys learn? Stop trying to be Billy Badass, Mr Toughguy and do the right thing and stop making it so hard.

Well, they don't say why they were in the street, and gilbert not wanting to leave his teammate is kind of honorable. There's nothing in that article that says he was trying to act like a tough guy, though If he had kept his mouth shut (if that's true what he said) he'd have gained a little respect.

557 people arrested in 2.5 days is a lot. Unless there's rioting going on, they're being a little anal about arresting people. Arresting someone for being in the street, even for blocking traffic (how does 1 man block a car?) is a bit excessive...

"teammate" so over used as an excuse. If the law says stay back, get back in your car , stop, or get down; whatever the case is for a given situation, (especially if there is some event confusion) and you ignore that request, you are a dumb ass and should be arrested. Just do what is asked, let the situation resolve itself. One man in Tiananmen Square blocked the path of a Army Tanks; so that is no excuse either, even though I read elswhere he was one of many people being asked to move, BUT if a driver (namely the lead driver) doesn't want any hit and run and vehicular manslaughter charges, they will stop, especially if police are present.

I still ask, if he was such a great teammate, why not escort his man OUT of the street?

And as usual they are all probably down there for Urban Beach Week during Memorial Day; a lot like New Orleans during Mardi Gras. So there as tons of DaD and other minor crimes with tons of police presence. So NOT a time to be showing off and disobeying police; (like there is an OK time).

How can he escort him out of the street if he doesn't go to him? You can't have it both ways, either he follows the order or he tries to restrain his friend.

I agree he should have listened, but it just seems like these cops are on a powertrip down there based on what we know now...arrested for being in the street? I could go #1 in the middle of a street in downtown cleveland and not get arrested...

hmm, that just opened me up for various cleveland jokes, but who cares. Nobody's ever accused arenas of being too smart for his own good anyways...

You know as well as I do I am talking BEFORE the police request he should have gone BEFOREHAND and got his man out of the street. Once they arrived and his man was caught up in it, and the requests were made, he should have then STAYED in the car, not decide to come out AFTER. He snoozed, waited till it was too late, and then disobeyed a police request; BOOM, arrested, as it should be.

The police are on no power trip, that is another over used excuse. There is a major event going on and they have a job to do to keep some streets clear and to keep petty criminals at bay, like pick pockets, etc. There needs to be a presence in that environment, and if you are issued a police request, you follow it. Too easy.

You sound as if you were there, and you weren't. You don't know when he tried to stand next to his teammate, or what the cops had a problem with, etc...

When we know more, then we can make a decision on what was right or wrong. We know the guy was in the street, we know the cops told him to get back to the sidewalk. We know he refused and got arrested, and we know gilbert also refused to stay away from the situation.

I haven't watched COPS in the past 15 years but they typically don't arrest you until you refuse to listen repeatedly to their request, whereas this article suggests they had one chance.

Since when is memorial day weekend so hectic that police have to be out in such force? 557 arrests in two days? Is there a riot in miami that I don't know about? That's seriously a lot of people getting arrested.

They have an event (that I have frequented) called Urban Beach Days during this wknd and it gets VERY rowdy. Like I said posts above, its very similar to Mardi Gras, except Miami doesn't fully block all the streets, just designated ones. You are correct, I am not there right now, but that is the usual event, and there were other witnesses that said he disobeyed and was telling them they can't arrest him.

Newer story: (Just added what hasn't been said - and it is because of Urban Beach - Memorial Celebration)

arests are being made as part of a planned crackdown on disorderly behavior among those who flocked to Miami Beach for Memorial Day weekend. So far, a total of 557 people were arrested between Thursday morning and Saturday night on Miami Beach. Most arrests were for disorderly conduct and intoxication. During the same three-day period last year, there were 333 arrests.

“We’re definitely over from last year,” Miami Beach police spokesman Bobby Hernandez said. “We’re working a lot more plainclothes officers, so you’re obviously going to make more arrests.”

Seems simple: do what the cops say or get arrested. Storey and Arenas are hereby convicted, in TheCourt of TheTimm, of being idiots.

And so what if the cops are on a "power trip"? They do indeed have the power. So do what they say. Or get arrested. Couldn't be simpler.

P.S. Until I saw the picture, I was seeing "Arenas" but somehow reading it as "Artest" (also a convicted idiot).

I would not doubt that there was some mouthing off at the cops, but before we START BELIEVING everything we read in the media(seems that people in the PIT will tell ya that the media is full of sh*t and the next minute BELIEVE everything they read)...let's wait until the ballers side of the story comes out. THEN you can say, there are 3 sides to every story....your side, my side...and the truth.

It sounds more like a cheap way of increasing your street cred! I think if they were wanted to improve street cred, why dont they hire Bobby Baccola and have him shoot him in the ass!

I think artest got a raw deal for the record...How much can you let the fans get away with...Any fan who throws something at an athlete is supposed to be dealt with, and any athlete who storms the court is supposed to be dealt with. I guess he should have just stood there and hoped the fan didn't hurt him while he waited for security to see it and help him out...

There was a story on the local cleveland news this morning (monday) about how local cops here are cracking down as well. They pull over ANYONE going above the limit, even if just 2-3 mph, and giving them warnings. Do we have nothing better to do, is there no crime, that we can have guys pulling people over for barely going over the limit with the known intention of giving a warning? Complete waste of time and money...

I know they're pissed that they have to work today, but don't take it out on us. They are on a power trip because I got pulled over at 3:30am this morning...ON A BIKE RIDE. I was turning around at the park and I knew a car was behind him (Park is on corner, 2 lanes go into the park, 2 don't), so he saw that I was just turning around and still acted like I was up to something. Wasted 5 minutes of my time before the 2nd cop pulled up for backup (I hadn't even gotten off the bike...), and then let me go about 3 minutes later now that my heartrate was completely down. To think that while that was going on, someone was getting robbed or their property defaced...
