Super Joey Smart Card Slot

Hello,

What is the purpose of the smart card slot in the SJ, and is a smart card required for normal operation?

It gives Dish a way to upgrade security if hackers defeat the encryption.

There is a smart card built in on the motherboard. But if DISH ever needs to change security then they will send you a new card which plugs into the slot and disables the other one built in.

I asked someone in the tech ops department at dish about that, and all he would say is that it's for future use.

Why would Dish even need to put a smart card slot in a Joey since it is just sharing a tuner from the Hopper?
