Can not run by itself from all reports, but that wording is odd. Perhaps they mean those two tuners are only seen and used by the person at that SJ, but that they have 5 more from the Hopper.

Folks.. think of it this way.

Its a regular Joey with a 2 Tuner Expansion Pack on it (and that expansion pack is only seen by the Hopper)

Thats what a Super Joey is.

No it can't the Joey is just a client. It has no brains to tune anything other then whats being sent by the Hopper.

The SJ has as about as much brains(CPU) as the H2K. The Hopper isn't magically changing the SJ tuners, it's making a request of some daemon running on the SJ to change the channel and feed the stream to the Hopper. In any half ass system design, having the Joey request a stream for itself should be fairly simple. The larger programming issues would probably be around the UI and the lack of drive storage for the tile graphics, channel logos, and other odds and ends.

I don't see any technical reason the SJ hardware couldn't function as a stand alone receiver (or even an SJ/Joey combo for two TVs), it's only restricted by what fits into Dish's plans.

Seemed like it would have been easier just to add a D44 switch to all S/J installs. You could have left the two lines from the dish. One port for the inserter, two for the solo node, and one for the integrator.

Wouldn't you still need 3 lines from the dish for 3 sat locations since the built in switch in the LNB is in bypass mode when used with a DPP44?

My 3rd output is currently going to a VIP211k so I plan to have three runs to the DPP44, 2 outs to the solo, 1 to the 211, 1 to the SJ.

6 Tuners, 1 private with DVR all without a 2nd Hopper!

They also have a video on the Portal talking about how it works and how to install the SJ. I will not be able to post that on here though. At the end of the video it made me laugh because the guy said how simple the system is to install after making it sound kind of complex. The whole thing makes sense but I can see some install issues with existing wiring.
