With the assistance of my wife watching the tv, I set up a fixed 33" dish on IA5 at 97 West. (SG2100 motor arrives today, but I couldn't wait!) I was able to get a signal strength and quality of around 80% each. I did a scan on my Fortec Ultra and got around 80 tv channels. After watching for a couple of hours, I returned to my set to find all the channels unwatchable. They now show 92% signal, 0% quality. What could have happened? Did I point the dish at a mirage? What's the meaning of signal? I can get 48% signal by pointing the dish at anything?

Maybe the dish has moved? It was a good idea to find and store a few satellites BEFORE the motor installation!

Otherwise go over all your settings and connections again!

Good luck!

Is there any way that if the dish didn't move, that I was somehow getting the signal from a false source or reflection? I'm paranoid that someone pressed some button on the remote and changed something, but on the other hand, I really didn't have to do anything to set up the Fortec Ultra. I just selected IA5 from the list and all the setting were correct for the LNB. After that, I just did a scan and able to save 80 tv channels and 129 in total.

What are the most common newbie mistakes in setup of the receiver? The transponder stuff looks overwhelming to a beginner. It seems to me the receiver already has transponder configurations stored, either that or it found them on a scan.

Is there somewhere I can read up on and understand transponders. I see that some are configured V and others H, but what are the other numbers? And how does a blind scan work? Does it run through frequencies or transponders, and at what configuration?

BLIND SCAN will scan the transponders, there will or can be multiple frequencies on each TP.

How are you using your FTA receiver, slaved or alone? I have mine slaved through a Motorola 922. Each transponder has it own polarity, horizontal and vertical and they alternate form TP to TP. When I scan with the FTA receiver I have to set the transponder on the 922 to match the polarity of the FR I am scanning. As for using the FTA receiver alone..............you will have to get some input from some of the guys that have their set up in that format.

Check to insure your SR is correct for the type of LNB you have.

Should be 10750 if standard.

Fortec Star Ultra Lifetime
33" Digiwave dish
0.3 Universal LNB
SG2100 motor

I have installed the SG2100 and have been able to find 4 satellites. Amc 3,4,5 and IA5 (my true south satellite). I manually peaked the direction of the dish and motor at the pole to IA5 as best I could. I then had to use the 1.2 nudge function to get a usable signal. I have then used USALS to turn the dish to the other satellites, but have to use 1.2's nudge to perfect it.

Should I be using USALS or Diseq 1.2? How does one compare to the other?

I'm totally unable to find G10. Maybe my elevation still needs some tinkering.

I use USALS and all my positions are bang on, but use whatever works best for you. With 1.2 you can move the dish east and west and store your position when you get the BEST signal quality. Good luck with the tinkering!

Once you have you stongest signal on T5, the rest of your sats should be all lined up nicely using your USALS. Just make sure your settings are correct. We use 97.2 in Winnipeg for longitude. That takes in the magnetic deviation etc....etc.... When you are doing your antenna setup you have to enter 49.9N for latitude and 97.2W for longitute and everything else should fall into place ..............MK (in Wpg)

If you still have to nudge using the 1.2 it means that you are not perfect east-west at the pole on your T5 signal.

:yes

If you are still having trouble , pm me and I'll give you my phone # and I'll try to give you a hand.

I find it better to fine tune with USALS than Diseq. Example: for IA5 I will test with 96.5, 97, 97.5 deg until the signal is stronger. The motor react to 0.5deg difference.

Thanks. That suggests I need to re-do my T5 as due South.

Does this sound logical?

1. Manually re-zero the SG2100 up on the roof using the button on the bottom case.
2. Swing motor on pole to peak on T5.
3. Return found satellite settings to USALS.

Sounds good to me .................. it's all about the pole. Once you think you have it, have someone watch the signal meter on your TV and give the dish a pull with your hand left and right and up and down and watch for positive signal adjustments and then tweak accordingly. Mark your pole with a Sharpie also, in case your dish moves so you have saved your starting point. (ballpark at least)

It will not work like that. What I do :

1. Tune to an active transponder on T5 (your true south sat) with USALS on the receiver
2. Swing motor/dish on pole to peak the signal on T5
3. Once the signal is peaked, tight the motor bolts
4. Fine tune the elevation of the dish, don't touch motor elevation

Depending on where you live, you should track the entire arc with USALS.
For me: from T12 at 15deg to IA7 at 129deg.

Good luck!

Gotcha Barney. I see what you're saying. By setting to it USALS for T5, it will turn the motor to what it believes it the proper position for T5, then I have to move the motor on the pole to make it so.
