Gessner's Ground and Pound: UFC prepares for their debut on Fox on Saturday, the UFC Welterweight Championship title picture, Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen meeting, and more
Nov 11, 2011 - 11:00 AM

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By Mark Gessner

Dominant Position

- UFC makes their debut on Fox this Saturday night at 9:00 EST with Cain Velasquez defending the UFC Heavyweight Championship versus Junior Dos Santos. This is one of the most important shows the company will ever have. This is a fight that could have drawn anywhere from 800,000 pay-per-view buys to well over one million but will instead be broadcasted on network television on one of the top four stations in Fox.

Despite initial rumors, Velasquez versus Dos Santos will be the only fight that will air on Fox, regardless of whether the fight goes "twenty-five minutes or twenty-five seconds" according to UFC President Dana White. The rest of the card will be airing of Facebook and Fox.com, including Ben Henderson versus Clay Guida which post likely will have UFC Lightweight Championship ramifications.

Prior to the event airing on Fox, FUEL TV will be airing a two hour preview show, beginning at 7:00 EST leading up to the fight with Jay Glazer, Stephan Bonnar, and Kenny Florian. Glazer, Bonnar, and Florian will also be doing a post-fight show on FUEL TV after Velasquez versus JDS.

On the Fox broadcast, UFC is bringing in former UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar to breakdown the fight, along with White and Curt Menefee of Fox NFL Sundays. Following breakdown and preview of the fight, Velasquez and JDS will be called by Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan.

Prior to this Saturday's fight, the first Ultimate Fighter season finale featuring Forrest Griffin versus Stephan Bonnar was the most important show in the company's history. The UFC gained major mainstream attention at the time and has since continued to build on the fan base that show garnered. Saturday's show is just as, if not more important for the future of the company going forward. Aside from the debacle that was Elite XC airing on CBS a few years, this is the first major exposure to MMA that people without cable have had.

UFC is sacrificing a huge payday by headlining this show with the UFC Heavyweight Championship fight. UFC is heading into the show realizing that this is a loss-leader. While giving up potentially mid-eight figure PPV sales, this will hopefully lead to more fights being purchased in the future assuming viewers getting their first exposure seeing an exciting championship fight and most likely an exciting finish.

As for the fight itself, I'm prediction Cain winning via TKO in the second round.

- After the catastrophe that was UFC 137 with the changing of the main event twice and the co-main event, the UFC's 170 pound division seems to have more clarity coming out of the show a couple weekends ago. After destroying B.J. Penn in the main event, Nick Diaz is getting his UFC Welterweight Championship fight that he was originally supposed to have going into UFC 137. Following his fight, Diaz called at champion George St-Pierre, which led to the normally mild-manner GSP to "flip out" and demand the fight. GSP will be fighting Diaz at the Superbowl weekend show.

Carlos Condit was originally slated to fight B.J. Penn at 137. After Diaz was bumped from the main event due to no-showing two press conferences, he was given a title shot versus GSP. However, he was pulled from the card when GSP suffered his knee injury and was told he would get a title shot when GSP recovered from his injury. Josh Koscheck, who was coming off of a first round TKO victory over UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes in September, offered to step in and fight Condit on a weeks notice, and main event the show. UFC elected to still keep Condit off the show so he was fresh for a healthy GSP. Condit however stepped aside at the request of Dana White and the UFC (more on that later) so the Diaz could fight GSP.

So now, with GSP fighting Diaz for the title in February, Josh Koscheck vs. Carlos Condit will be the co-main event on that show. Most likely, the winner of that fight will face the winner of GSP vs. Diaz.

Jon Fitch is making his UFC return from injury this December at UFC 141. Fitch fought Penn to a majority draw at UFC 127 and has been on the shelf since with a shoulder injury. Assuming he beats Johny Hendricks in his return fight, Fitch will most likely find himself one win away from being the next number one contender after Koscheck vs. Condit. As for potential opponents after Hendricks, Jake Ellenberger has to be at the top of the list. Ellenberger is currently in the top 5 for welterweight rankings following his destruction of former Strikeforce and Elite XC Champion Jake Shields this past Fall.

So, barring any injuries, which based on this past year has been a huge issue and the words "card subject to change" never being more prevalent, the UFC Welterweight Championship has almost been setup for the next year with challengers and how the fighters earn their title shots. The winner of Koscheck vs. Condit in February, faces the winner of GSP vs. Diaz in June-July. Jon Fitch faces Ellenberger in the Spring, and the winner fights for the title at the end of next year.

Striking Flurry

- Both Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen are in San Jose, CA for the UFC on Fox debut show this weekend and they are both set to meet with one another and UFC executives to discuss their fight for the UFC Middleweight Championship. This is a fight that has been in the making for over a year ever since their first fight which saw Sonnen dominate Silva for four and a half rounds before Silva got a submission victory out of nowhere. This is without a doubt personal, not business for both fighters, and could be one of the highest selling PPVs in UFC history for whatever card this fight headlines.

- With the UFC transitioning from Spike to Fox, UFC has brought in ESPN's Jon Anik to provide play-by-play for all shows on FX including the live fights every Friday night during The Ultimate Fighter. Anik has anchored MMA Live on ESPN and ESPN 2 for the past few years and also provided commentary for the first season of Bellator. While it is not yet known who will be his color commentator, the front-runners for the spot are TUF Season 1 alums Stephan Bonnar and Kenny Florian.

- Starting this past weekend at UFC 138: Leben vs. Munoz, UFC started its new policy of every card having a five round main event. Mark Munoz defeated Chris Leben via corner stoppage after two rounds in the first non-title fight five round fight in UFC history. The next non-title five rounder will be Dan Henderson vs. Shogun Rua at UFC 139 on November 19, followed by Jason "Mayhem" Miller vs. Michael Bisping on The Ultimate Fighter Finale on December 3, and then former UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar vs. the last Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem at UFC 141. For the first four slated non-title five round fights, the chances of any of them going the full twenty-fives in all but guaranteed to not happen.

Knockout Blow

"Who the hell steps aside!??!!?!?!!?!?!? WTF!?!!?!? "here, just take my title shot!". What the hell is wrong with dudes!!??" - @CMPunk in reference to Carlos Condit stepping aside for Nick Diaz to fight Georges St-Pierre for the UFC Welterweight Championship

UFC on FOX ratings: How did the premier show perform against heavy football competition?
UFC on FOX made its debut last night to 4.56 million viewers, scoring a 2.1 rating in the adult 18-49 demo. This number is likely to be revised upward due to the nature of how viewers are calculated when live programming is shown from coast-to-coast.TV Ratings: Oregon-Stanford, UFC on FOX Top Saturday - Ratings | Shore's Slant: It is believed that UFC and Fox were hoping for 3 million viewers, so this is certainly a win for them if that is true. The show finished behind the GOP debate and the Oregon-Stanford college football game. Now the question remains, how many of that 4.6+ million people were new fans, and how many will buy the next PPV. TV Ratings: Oregon-Stanford, UFC on FOX Top Saturday

Due to the nature of live coast-to-coast programming the ratings for ABC (College Football), CBS (Republican Debate) and Fox (UFC) are approximate and subject to more than the typical adjustments in the final numbers. See below for more information on these Fast Affiliate Ratings.

All the broadcast networks had at least one hour of programming that aired live coast-to-coast last night, so the fast national ratings are much more prone to adjustment than usual. The fast national ratings are set up to measure the primetime time periods. When there is live primetime programming that is broadcast coast-to-coast the eastern and central time zones get measured properly, but the mountain and pacific time zones do not. That's about 20% of the country (population wise) that doesn't get measured correctly. So basically, live events get under-counted in the fast national ratings and are adjusted (up) in the finals.

Also any live programming that runs past 11pm on the east coast (which is often the highest-rated portion of sporting events) doesn't get measured in eastern and central times, and west coast viewing after 11pm shows up in the 8pm hour.

Disclaimers aside, we still know that many more watched Oregon-Stanford and UFC than Notre Dame-Maryland.

Nielsen TV Ratings: ©2011 The Nielsen Company. All Rights Reserved.

Definitions:

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent. More information on ratings is available here.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Fast National Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live baseball game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

Alistair Overeem Wants To Send Lesnar Back To WWE
@ArielHelwani was at Friday’s UFC 141 press conference and interviewed heavyweight fighter Alistair Overeem about his upcoming fight with Brock Lesnar on Dec. 30.
Overeem was asked about comments he made earlier in the week about kicking Brock Lesnar’s ass so bad he left MMA. He laughed and said:“I think I said something more along the lines of ‘I’m going to send Brock back to WWE’“ “It’s going to be a great fight. Brock is a very strong guy, but I believe I’m the #1 (heavyweight in the division) and I’m going to hit him as hard as I can and kick his ass and knock him out.”Overeem also gave his pick for the UFC on FOX fight between Cain Velasquez and Junior Dos Santos. QUICK THOUGHTS ON LAST NIGHT'S UFC ON FOX
By Dave Scherer on 2011-11-13 11:01:33
Before I start I want to say that I know that we are a pro wrestling site and it's not my plan to mix MMA coverage with the reporting that we do on the wrestling business. With that said, UFC debuted on Fox last night and as it was a pretty big night for the company, I wanted to throw my two cents in on what happened.

My initial plan was do a blog as the fight progressed and post it on the site. Unfortunately, the fight was almost over before it began.

To set the scene Cain Velasquez, the champion and man who beat Brock Lesnar, was defending the Heavyweight Title against Junior Dos Santos. The hype segments before the match were really well done. UFC President Dana White does a great job with the UFC product. He has his pulse on his audience in a way that Vince McMahon did many years ago (and hasn't since). White knows what his audience wants and he gives it to them.

Last night's fight had two big, strong heavy hitters and I was looking forward to it. The beauty of UFC is that whoever the top contenders are, they fight. It's not like boxing where guys like Floyd Mayweather hold the business hostage by not giving fans the fight that they want to see. UFC puts the number one guy against the number two guy and that is what we got last night.

As a casual UFC fan even I knew that the one thing that Velasquez didn't want to do was stand toe-to-toe with Dos Santos, who is basically a one discipline fighter that tells you his whole game is his fists and he dares you to stop it. So what did Velasquez do? He stood directly in front of him and took one looping right hand to the back of his ear and then made close acquaintance with the canvas. It was over that fast. So much for the blog.

You could look at the fight in one of two ways, and here they are.

On the one hand, you could marvel at the suddenness by which the fight ended. The fact that it went down as it did (or rather that Velasquez went down as he did), showed the "anything can happen" nature of the sport. If you are a new viewer and you like that kind of thing, you will be back. For sure.

On the other hand you could, as I did, wonder how Velasquez was the champion to begin with. Now don't get me wrong here. I know Cain is tough and if Dos Santos pounded my melon like that I would have hit the mat before he even made contract with me. I am no hero....but UFC fighters are. And while am I sure that was stiff shot and felt anything but pleasant, I have seen so many other fights where guys took much more of a pounding and fought back, often winning in the process. Hell, Brock Lesnar himself if one of those guys.

Instead UFC trotted out their top guy, their champion, and he looked like a tomato can (and again I clearly know that he is not). Don't get me wrong. I get that it was a hard shot and all but it is the kind of blow that should finish a guy off that has taken a lot of other shots before it, not take out the defending champion one minute into the bout.

Then again, I should have known it would go this way before the fight when Dos Santos came out to the theme from Rocky while Velasquez came out to family party music. The die was cast.

What bugged me the most was what happened post-fight as after the bout Velasquez said, "I was afraid to fight with him, you know, because he's very tough. I was not 100 percent for this fight, so I was scared."

Uh, you are the champion and you are afraid to fight? He is very tough? What about you? You were not 100 percent? What is this, boxing all of the sudden? It left a bad taste in my mouth, it really did.

The worst part is that UFC trusted Velasquez to go out there and sell the product to a new audience and he didn't hold up his end. I really wish that after the fight ended so quickly that they would have shown the Ben Henderson-Clay Guida fight. That would have given fans a real taste of what UFC is all about. But the company attached its wagon to the big fight and they stayed with it. I get that.

Knowing how smart Dana White is, he will have that contingency covered next time. He showed last night that what he could control would be done correctly. UFC will get plenty more chances on Fox and they have a product that will be easy to sell, that is for sure. I know next time around, I will be watching.

UFC Fighter Shares Crazy Brock Lesnar Training Camp Story
The following is an excerpt from an interview with UFC fighter Nik Lentz from MMAMania.com. In a quote from the interview, Lentz talks about an incident he experienced during a recent training session with former UFC heavyweight champion and WWE Superstar Brock Lesnar.

"I did roll with him one time and number one, it was really gross because the dude sweats like a ridiculous amount so I was just covered in Brock Lesnar sweat, like just dripping in his own sweat but then he was kinda messing around and I jumped on a guillotine and I wound up eventually tapping him out and then he actually got kinda angry and the next time that we started, he just picked me up above his head WWE-style and like threw me across the room so that was the end of my training with Brock. I got him one time. I jumped on the guillotine because he wasn't ready for it and I choked him out and then after that I got thrown across the room."

UFC Officially Adds A New Weight Class, Dana White Comments
UFC recently announced that it will be adding a flyweight division (125 lbs.) to it's list of weigh classes -- beginning in 2012.The plan as of this moment is for the first flyweight fights to take place at a pay-per-view event on March 3, 2012.Ian McCall will be fighting Demetrious Johnson, while Joseph Benavidez fights Yasuhiro Urushitani, with the winners facing each other to decide the first ever UFC flyweight champion."It's not really a tournament," UFC President Dana White said. "It's two fights in the same weight class with the best guys -- we've done that a million times. Both fights on the same card and who wins will fight for the title." "We wouldn't do it if we didn't have a stacked division," White said.

Lesnar Comment On Guilty Plea
– As reported earlier this week, Brock Lesnar has plead guilty to “improper tagging of an animal” on a November 2010 hunting trip. The other two charges, leaving meat to rot and illegal possession of wildlife, were then dropped. Lesnar has issued the following statement explaining the situation:“In November 2010 I went on a filmed hunt in Alberta, Canada. It was sponsored by Fusion Ammunition and guided by Trophy Hunters Alberta. In Alberta, Americans can’t hunt without a licensed outfitter. The outfitter is there to make sure you follow the rules. I had two deer tags for the trip which meant I could legally shoot two deer. On the first day of the trip, I shot a mule deer. On the second day, I shot a white tail. Videos from the hunt have been on the Internet for over and year. After I shot the mule deer, I failed to immediately tag it. As far as I was involved, that’s all there is to it. Now it’s resolved. I paid my fine today. It’s the kind of thing that happens to hunters all the time. I want to thank the Canadian authorities for their cooperation in resolving this misunderstanding. I love Canada and I can’t wait to go back to Alberta for a hunt.

Reminder: UFC 141: “Lesnar vs. Overeem” Airs This Friday
The “UFC 141: Lesnar vs. Overeem” event will take place this Friday, instead of the normal airing on Saturday night, due to New Year’s Eve festivities this weekend.UFC officials moved up the start times to 9 p.m. ET ( 6 p.m. PT) back in April, however they will change the time yet again after 12 events, because of complaints from viewers in the West Coast, along with a PPV revenue decline. The winner of the UFC 141 main event gets the chance to take on heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos.UFC 141: “Lesnar vs. Overeem” is scheduled to take place on December 30, 2011 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, and will air live on Facebook, Spike TV and pay-per-view, respectively.
Brock Lesnar’s UFC Training Partner Shares Funny Story
The following is a quote from UFC fighter and training partner of former heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar, Tim Hague. In the following quote, Hague describes his experience serving as a training partner of the former WWE Superstar.“Was pretty surreal. Best training, and best group of guys I’ve ever trained with. WAR LESNAR. Because I need to get better at everything, and being able to work with Pat Barry and Cole Konrad one-on-one was unreal. Working MMA with Brock and five other legit UFC level HW’s every day is something I don’t get up in Edmonton. I’m not gonna give away any of his strategy, but he is scary strong, and scary conditioned, and if he gets the jump on a takedown, you’re going down, or you’re blowing out a knee or something haha. I just went there for a week to be a [heavyweight] dummy for Brock and the guys, I was slightly outta shape, but know what I have to do to be better next time. I wasn’t paid or nothing, didn’t ask to be and felt like I should have paid them to be there. I don’t know who’s better (Lesnar or Konrad), they both made me their b*tch on the mats, and Cole’s boxing is great as well. I got invited back for a full camp, and I’m chomping at the bit to make that happen.

I do not think it will go even deep into round one. Brock must go for the ground game and I see Alistar catching him with those awesome knees
