Does anyone know how I can find out how far I am from one of these? i have been told I want to be within 3000 feet of one, but att tells me I have to order first and only the install tech can tell me with his handheld device.

Unfortunately I know of no way to do it other than have the tech come out and tell you. They will do Uverse installs over 3000 ft from the VRAD by doing pair bonding.
The way I measured is I drove to the VRAD and then back to my home following all of the AT&T boxes/access points. Its not totally accurate, but it gave me a general idea.
