VIP 211K Recording

If I use my VCR to record off the antenna output on my 211K (a preprogrammed recording) I just get a black picture and no sound. If I turn the receiver off and on during the recording then the picture and sound appear. Any ideas of how to fix this problem (short of buying a DVR)?
