Hey, blatimer1983!

The VIP receivers are obsolete, so we don't set up new customers with these receivers any longer. If you currently have a VIP receiver, we still exchange those for any technical issues. However, we encourage changing to our XiP/ZiP receivers to avoid any programming issues resulting from needed migrations in the future.

What is XIP/ZIP receivers?

No new echostar VIPs have been manufactured in years, remaining stock is refurb so in a way yes it is being phased out in terms of mainstream support but you will still receive an extended amount of support if any are in your account (though that may change in the coming years).

Usually the refurbs are for replacing existing units as stated, or if you still really want the 211z solo for dish outdoors somehow depending if your vendor still has any left, the latter of which can still be registered to a new or existing account when you call for PAYG service.

Unless it's for legacy reasons (i.e. you swear by Gandalf) or when you want to try your luck sparing some change on a dish outdoors setup, it's best for the average joe to go hopper/wally.

There was an 811 HD receiver that came after the 6000.
