[VOOM] If you've cancelled VOOM, WHY???

With threads of REFUND, I'm curious why anyone would cancel VOOM after they
got it up and running. I'm new to voom (last week install) but I LOVE IT and
after I get my ABC channel and SCI-FI, I'll be completely set. Why would you
cancel VOOM???

[VOOM] Re: If you've cancelled VOOM, WHY???

Well I got rid of Voom because they are missing some key channels
that my wife and I enjoying watching on a daily basis. Having more
HD channels of programming that we seldom watch just didn't fit what
we want in TV entertainment. When VOOM gets these channels, probably
when they launch the next bird, I will be back.

Re: [VOOM] Re: If you've cancelled VOOM, WHY???

It seems to me that your email address is an oxymoron. Do I have this
correct? You want your HDTV but you cancel the largest HDTV sub
service on the planet because you want standard definition channels?
what am I missing?

[VOOM] Five reasons people cancel VOOM (Was: Re: If you've cancelled VOOM, WHY???)

I would say the top five reasons are:

1) Missing locals or lack of off-air reception. Could be that some
of the network affiliates aren't transmitting, or reception
conditions could be less than optimal (weak signal out in the
boonies, severe multipath in a NY apartment, etc). Problem could
also be an improperly pointed antenna or an incorrectly installed
diplexor. Many installers just don't have experience with off-air
reception, and others don't want to put in the effort -- the VOOM STB
is partly at fault, as it doesn't provide any sort of automated setup
or point-antenna screen to aid the installer.

2) Botched install. Customer doesn't receive a stable picture on
their satellite channels because the installer failed to correctly
peak the dish. The failure of an installer to correctly peak the
dish can also cause picture dropouts with mild weather (drizzles,
overcast skies). Some installers assume that a signal good enough
for Dish or DirecTV is good enough for VOOM, when a truly peaked
signal is necessary for reliable service on VOOM.

3) Complaints from girlfriend / wife about certain missing channels.
The lack of FOOD and HGTV channels can make for an unhappy wife.
Nobody likes to hear whining about a missing channel every other day.
If you're not getting any in bed until she gets her FOOD channel,
you're not going to have VOOM for very long.

4) Lack of a DVR. Comcast and TWC offer a HDTV DVR in many markets.
DirecTV offers a HDTV Tivo for $1000.

5) VOOM STB usability. If you've used a DirecTV satellite receiver
(or even a digital cable box), the behavior of the VOOM STB can seem
very tedious at times. The VOOM menu as the default navigation
borders on unusable, imo, and some customers don't discover the
favorites list. The VOOM UI doesn't move to the currently viewed
channel and doesn't hide and filter out channels you don't
subscribe. It is limited to a single favorites list (other STBs have
three to five lists), it only lists five channels at a time with
incomplete program information, and the program reminder feature
doesn't work if the box is off. Compare what you have now to the
translucent guide people have on their DirecTV receivers:

RE: [VOOM] Five reasons people cancel VOOM (Was: Re: If you've cancelled VOOM, WHY???)

Okay, honestly to me, 2 out of the 5 you list are possibly enough for me to
cancel, though I won't be doing that.

4) No DVR in my area from TWC and I WILL NOT pay $1000 for a DVR. I don't
give a crap who it's from or what it does. That is just outrageous!

5) Yeah, I had Directv for 2.5 yrs with Microsoft's Ultimate TV. The ONLY
thing it missed was HD. I had the two tuners, loved life. Then lightning
struck. I had Time Warner Cable. Neither offered what VOOM offers today or
what they will offer after October. I seriously miss being able to record
shows. But I won't leave voom because of it. Once you've had HD, I don't see
how you can go back. (unless you have a nagging wife who leaves you dry).

[VOOM] Five reasons people cancel VOOM (Was: Re: If you've cancelled VOOM, WHY???)

You guessed it. Number 3 was my problem but I like watching those
channels too. Would never pay 1000 dollars to record HD. Only local
channels missing not VOOMs fault. Al-Queda is to blame for that. Had
some problems with installation but mostly positive. STB has it's
issues but last push made it MUCH better.

I also have another 800 plus reasons why! :) The question is, when
will I see it?

[VOOM] Re: If you've cancelled VOOM, WHY???

I suppose your right Tim. Maybe I should change it to=20
iwantmycakeandeatito37. Do I want VOOM, yes. I have Cablevision iO=20
digital cable which has alot of HD for a cable company(right Wilt),=20
adding ESPN-HD tommorrow as a matter of fact. They also have local=20
news, weather and other things VOOM doesn't have. I guess no matter=20
who you get your service from, you can't have everything.

Of course there's the Mrs. who watches more TV than I do, so I have=20
to take that into consideration. ;)

[VOOM] Re: If you've cancelled VOOM, WHY???

I am on my last month before I plan to cancel Voom.
My main reason is the microstutter on all channels. I guess most
people do not notice them, I noticed them immediately after getting
Voom. I still have my DirecTV HD and I do not have them there.
We were also promised local channel scanning. 6 months later, we are
still waiting.

Snappingfish,

That microstutter might be the STBs fault. I have two STBs. The one in my bedroom has had microstutters twice (it was corrected with a cold boot both times). The one in my basement has never had the problem. I have gone between the two TVs while the microstutter was occurring on the bedroom box to validate that the other STB was not experiencing the microstutter. So that causes me to believe it is not a problem at the source or the LNB, but at the STB.

The "promised" code is currently in beta.
It totally resolves the "stutter" and does have the scanner.
It's good stuff; a few more fixes before it's pushed out but shouldn't be
much longer.
Software's like that, it takes longer than expected. :-(
Thanks,
Wilt

I couldn't agree more Wilt. I am a computer programmer specializing in
Accounting software and eCRM. I cannot begin to explain how much work goes
into programming and testing. It's mind boggling. There are so many
variations and factors that programmers have to take into account and then
get thoroughly tested, it's not funny.

I would recommend Snappingfish hold off on cancelling and wait for the new
update. Patience is a virtue, remember? ; - )

You are a man of principles occammd. That's good. I hope that the price you are paying (i.e., losing tons of HD programming other than a few movies with gay themes) is worth it.

occammd said:

Hah! That "type of programming" is found on any number of other channels mixed in already and often on the major networks so its free of charge. Come on, the past three days on Divine have included "Bett Middler", "The Owl and the Pussycat" and "Ziggy Stardust". Have you seen any of these shows? Quite lame and tame if you ask me. BTW, you are the first person I've ever heard of that would terminate a TV service because it DIDN"T have commercials. FWIW, your tax dollars have funded art projects that include urine drenched crucifixes, homosexual nude photos and performance art. So, perhaps unwittingly, you have already contributed to the very thing you may be trying to avoid and as it appears so far your tax dollars are funding far more explicit and controversial pieces than the lame stuff found on VOOM's Divine HD.

It's not quite like that to me , but I don't want to hijack the thread. We've beat it to death. I would be happy to discuss it in another thread. Take Care.

Why Cancel? how about missing locals? Sci-Fi,YES Network. Christian channels. Having to wait two weeks to get a bad receiver replaced? Having to reboot daily(at least).

Gizmocjv said:

Why did you sign up in the first place without those channels? They were never promised. Didn't do your homework?

I get 12 out of 13 local channels. No SCI-FI/YES ( Yet but I know they're
coming ).

Cancel because their return service sucks.. so does MANY other companies in
life. Keep busy, time flies and you'll have it before you know it.

I've cold booted once since last week and that was after the latest update
via satellite.

Sorry you're having problems.. work them out.. don't give up so quickly..
it's not the end of the world and last time I checked, we're talking about
leading edge technology here. It's not like it's been around 20 years.

[VOOM] Re: If you've cancelled VOOM, WHY???

Wilt,

Does the new code also fix the sound dropouts when changing
channels ? The only real issue I have with the box right now is a
lot of times when I change channels I need to go channel up and down
to get the sound to drop in.

Thanks,

Scott

RE: [VOOM] Re: If you've cancelled VOOM, WHY???

My only issue with sound is when I go from an HD to an SD. HD sounds awesome
on my sound system but SD sounds like 2 channels std audio.
