[VOOM] Pros and Cons

I was curious to know if anyone has ever compiled a decent list of
the pros and cons of the various options for HD, regarding VOOM and
how it stacks up against DirecTV, Cable, and other companies. I have
read various posts about certain features and how they compare on
different systems, but I would be interested at reading a more
exhaustive comparison. It would come in handy since I want to get
VOOM very badly and I have to sell the idea to my wife. Oh, I could
go ahead and get it, but as to where I would be sleeping, well...

------------------------

If you own a HDTV and have $1.00 that is all you should need to sell the idea.
I have had every form of DBS and cable that is available in my area and had no problem giving them up. I can't imagine being without my Voom.

Paying VOOM even $1 is too much to become one of their 26,000 beta testers.
Save your money but mostly save your frustration and avoid VOOM for now.

If Voom will be your only provider...

and you like sports, forget it. They only carry 1 or 2 regional sports networks. I liked Voom, but when it came time for basketball season, they couldn't deliver, so i moved to Dish Network.

Don't let people fool you with all this talk about all the HD channels that Voom has. It really comes down to what you actually watch. For me, it came down to having my regional sports network, and realizing that the HD that I really actually watched were OTA and ESPNHD, which Dish Network has. I think it's important to really assess what you watch before switching.

I don't get some people, they complaign about VOOM yet they are the same ones screaming for more HD content.

Some folks you can't make happy.

I have VOOM and love it. I am enjoying the most HD available anywhere all because of VOOM.

the picture is amazing. it sold me. i will keep it for as long as it's available. they have some problems but slowly seem to be working them out. i agree with frankjo, if you are mostly a sports watcher it may not be for you. i love my sports and can get most with the ota antenna. i also kept my cable for the locals just in case i had trouble with the ota antenna. the locals only is $18 a month.

Thanks, rjones,

I printed your reply and will share it with the wife this evening. I
have a VOOM installer coming out on Tuesday to look at my setup and
give me an estimate on the cost of "doing the job right" as he says.
I guess he wants to make some money on the install which, I can't say
I blame him. But doesn't VOOM pay him to do installations as an
authorized VOOM dealer? I wouldn't mind giving him a cash tip if he
does a good job - that way the wife won't know about it. Anyone else
been charged extra for installation during the one dollar promo?

Voom pays installs, Inc. and Installs, Inc. pays local installer. All you pay is $1.00 and that will be billed to your credit card. If he does any work outside of a normal install (i.e.,burying cable, fishing wires down the wall, mounting dish on pole, etc., etc.), it may cost you extra but the basic installation is $1.00.

He is paid to do a good job so don't feel obligated to pay him an extra $20.00 dollars or so. Offer him a coke or buy him lunch instead.

That's incorrect. A tip is fine if you feel it justified but VOOM pays for
almosteverything needed. If he tries to charge you extra for longer cable,
etc it may be justified. There is an official written policy on this I
believe and you should be able to find what you need on the VOOM site or
from a CSR.
Don't let him con you. He should show up to do the installation, not "give
you an estimate". Call VOOM and insist on someone else...

I agree with Scott. I have compared Dish and Direct pic standard PQ quality to VOOm and VOOM is even better on that score. Although I have a C-band BUD that is even better, I would give that up before I would give up my VOOM. And I maybe just doing that soon. HD PQ on VOOM Exclusives could be improved, but still better than most others.

Re: [VOOM] Pros and Cons

Voomster2,
I disagree completely with that statement. While it may be true for you, it
is not true for most of those 26,000 "beta testers". Do you work for
Charlie? or Rupert?
For someone who is not interested in the FOX sports channels and who is
interested in the most HD content VOOM is the best choice. What do you base
your bias on?

OK, thanks. I went to the VOOM web site and found this about
installations:

Service Work:
- Installation of the VOOM satellite dish and the high definition
antenna in the most appropriate available location. Wiring and
connection of VOOM receiver unit to 1 television using up to 125ft of
coaxial cable.
- Connection of a telephone line from the VOOM receiver to a phone
outlet. VOOM will supply up to 25' of appropriate cabling to connect.

Available Extras:
- Installations requiring special accommodations or work requiring
more cable may incur additional charges.
- Additional charges may also be due in the case of situations
requiring additional time or hardware. Such situations may include,
but aren't limited to, houses over 2 stories tall, houses with
limited visibility of sky due to trees or other obstructions (line of
sight issues), work requiring cables or telephone cords to be hidden
in walls or moldings, setup and or connections of televisions or home
theater systems, and other customer requests for a customized
installation.
- Any additional charges will be identified and a quote will be
provided to the customer for approval before work begins.

So, with that last line, I guess he has grounds for doing a quote. I
think I'm safer that way because I can always just not get the system
if he says I have to pay more. When I had cable installed, I got
charged alot for some very minor connections. Anyway, I'll just wait
and see what he suggests. One thing he did mention was that the OA
antenna that comes with the system is bad and wants me to buy his for
something like $100. Doesn't the included antenna do the job?

Hi there. This "doing the job right" thing is a lot of nonsense.
Send me, privately to wilth@optonline.net, your contact info; name address
and phone number and, if you know it, the same for the
installer/installation company.
Thanks,
Wilt

Kudos, Wilt. That sort of stuff shouldn't be tolerated. While it may just be
the way the installer said it, it gives the appearance of fleecing the
customer.

If the guy is "doing his job", the "right" part becomes automatic.

Only wish the entire Voom organization put were as on top of things as you
have been in the Forum.

This installer is trying to scam you. Please do as Wilt suggests. He
is VP of engineering at VOOM and will fet your installation "problem"
to someone at VOOM's head office who will make sure you get a good
install including an OTA antenna appropriate for your location for the $1.

Still watching HDTV under cloudless Seattle skies, Gill

Bad?? Pffft! The guy is BSing you. When my install was done, it was a 60-90
minute deal, expertly executed and OTA worked right out of the box with the
antenna supplied once the channels were mapped.

The more the guy talks, the worse he sounds.

Yep

I've gone whole hog on voom.

As soon as the new channels are available, I will be dropping the remants of my dtv and my cable, and getting a dvr and a 3rd stb

Pros..

I have no problems with Voom Satellite programming and HD content.
And Yes, who would not like MORE??

Cons..

Local over the air network stations. I would estimate that 50 to 75%
of the time we view OTA stations. On the plus side they do come in HD
via the Voom Box. However, because of where we are located, some
stations can not be received. As an example the nearest PBS station
is 42 miles there is little hope of receiving it. We do not get that
station and there is no satellite replacement channel for PBS. It's
the same for UPN. We switched from DirecTv that did provide local
network stations via the satellite, a plus for them, to Voom. With
that said I like Voom and would not even think of going back to
DirecTv.
