[VOOM] WWOR CH 38 IN MANHATTAN -Problem

Receiving a strong signal of 99% on my Voom(doing: Aim off-Air
Antenna on RF 38) Yet, the VOOM box refuses to map it into the
channel list. I have no problem getting the signal with an old RCA
DTC-100(shows as 38-3 and 38-4)I think VOOM simply needs to map
channel 38 for us, since it does not scan and add WWOR into the
system.

It has been already mapped already. I and others did a scan and got it on our Voom stb. Why are you not getting it to lock?

Re: [VOOM] WWOR CH 38 IN MANHATTAN -Problem

You try to scan it in yourself? You've got the signal strength so when you
do a scan the channel is normally added. If you watch the scan does it
hesitate/ at RF 38? If you have multipath issues that are insurmountable
for the receiver I've seen it dwell on that channel and then move on. If
you can reorient the channel sometimes you can get a lock even if the signal
strength is not as high. My suggestion would be to not use VOOM, tune the
station on the analog side with a tuner capable of this, and get the picture
the clearest and most ghost free. What you are going for is one very
dominant picture rather than almost an equally dominant ghost. Then try
your digital scan again. It might work as long as signal is over 85 still.

As was suggested before, go to installation wizard and click on option # 3 (AIM Antenna). Enter RF channel 38 and click Enter on the Voom remote. The bar will display how strong of a signal you are getting through the Voom stb. In order to lock onto the channel it needs to be 85 or more and the green bar needs to be consistent. Not dropping. If you do not get an 85 or more consistently, I'll suggest to re-aim the antenna until you do. After this re-run the scan function.

Of course I mean change the antenna direction slightly to remove ghosts
which are a big problem in the steeel canyon's of Manhattan.

Yeah, this is a real strange occurence. When WWOR-DT first came on
it would not map. Then it mapped okay and a lot of us mapped it and
have it on our box. The other day I went and did a channel scan and
once again the channel (UHF 38) would not map on the box. Luckily I
did not save the new scan, and still have WWOR-DT scanned in from
the previous scan.

Something is wrong with the PSIP of that channel and the VOOM box
will not load it while it is on 38-1 instead of 9-1. I wish VOOM
would map the channel for us in our permanent settings. This way it
will stay there. I would warn anyone in the NYC not to do a scan
and save the channels. If you do you probably will lose WWOR-DT in
your mapping.

I got this e-mail from the chief engineer at WWOR-DT :

Thanks for you comments. We are unable to generate PSIP for WWOR
at this time. Shortly we will have the equipment in place to be able
to
generate PSIP/EPG, etc. We're sorry for any inconvenience this causes
our Viewers, please be assured that we are making every effort
possible
to quickly resolve this situation.

Al Shjarback
VP Engineering and Operations WNYW/WWOR TV

I do not think the VOOM box will map this channel no matter how
strong the signal is under the scan function. I think they were
fooling around with the PSIP the other day, which allowed some of us
to map it. I do not think the scan function will map the channel
while it stays on 38-1. It needs to be on 9-1.

Sean,

I think they're still messing around with things on the combiner. If
you recall for the first day or two after they went on the air, Voom
STBs were seeing good signal but wouldn't recognize things on a scan.
Then somnething happenned in a day or two that made the scan
successful and 9-1 and 9-2 were mapped.

A few days ago I tried scanning again and was no longer detecting
anything on 38 even though I'm still seeing 99 as signal strength. So
I abandoned the scan and can still tune 9-1 and 9-2. But if someone
hadn't scanned previously, they won't get it now.

Firmware is the latest 7.26.

I think VOOM has a problem mapping a channel when the PSIP is not
correct.

Morning Scott,

Can you tell me what firmware version resides in you STB? We've had a
similar problem with PBS ch. 9-5 HD here in Seattle. For a couple of
months VOOM "fixed" something so we could get it. However, it's been
missing in action again for the past few days. And we haven't done a
new channel scan.

Still watching HDTV under very cold clear Seattle skies, Gill

It has been already mapped already. I and others did a scan and got it
on our Voom stb. Why are you not getting it to lock?

If you do not get an 85 or more consistently, I'll suggest to re-aim the
antenna until you do. After this re-run the scan function.
