If it is true a landline is needed for the next upgrade, perhaps the
only boxes to get the new software are those that report back? No
report back--no upgrade. Another tip from CS for those anxious for
the upgrade, turn the box off through the remote, not the off switch
on the box. Apparently, the sleep mode to allow upgrades is
activated by shutting down through the remote only.
