[VOOM] W-VHS?

I have S-VHS and regular VHS. What is W-VHS?
Also, has anyone tried to record SD using the S-VHS output of the Mot STB
using a S-VHS VCR?
Also, group, let's not encourage people to go the VOOM route if all they
really focus on is OTA. It's too problematic. I think VOOM talks about this
in the back room as "THE PROBLEM".
That and the low angle of the satellite were the two initial problems.
If I started VOOM, I would have killed the OTA idea, brought over more
channels from Comcast (mostly SD), and added almost every national HD
channel available. I would have chosen a satellite location with a high
angle.Maybe the new "West Coast" satellite will solve the problem. I have
no problem with signal strength or rain fade.
Figure that VOOM could have been just an HD extension using Comcast's huge
resources. Instead, it seems that there was too much duplication of
Comcast's existing resources, and VOOM is bleeding like a stuck pig as a
result.
Maybe VOOM was just offering too much too early, and the consumer's
expectations are too great for the limitations of the technology?

W-VHS is similar D-VHS in that it can record HD. It is not as sharp as D-VHS, but is still pretty good. W-VHS records from the component outs while D-VHS is from firewire. It also does not have a 5.1 audio out on it.

W-VHS I believe is a video cassete deck that records HD analog through component inputs. It's not as good quality as HD digital recording but still looks pretty good-definitely better than SD. Those decks are hard to find now, however.

Yes you can record SD through the S video and Composite video outputs of the VOOM STB.

My OTAs come in really well and it's worth it to me to be able to record to hard disk those programs (particularly HD sports) that I'm not around to see in real time. A nice feature of MyHD is that you can program the remote to jump ahead or back a predetermined time interval to eliminate viewing commercials. I watched the entire Rosebowl last year in approximately an hour and twenty minutes.

I think the real reason, aside from all the install related issues
which are serious indeed, is that people really do not want to pay
more for HD. That is precisely why they are targeting areas with
OTA signals...to give the impression of more value for your money.

It's not working. People won't pay more for HD. Oh some will, but
most won't. It's why VOOM is failing.

Lets not forget that currently the ONLY way to get HD local networks with ANY satellite service is OTA. OTA reception issues are not limited to Voom. If you have OTA issues with Voom you will have them with D* and E* as well.

[VOOM] Re: W-VHS?

FYI, VOOM is owned by Cablevision not Comcast.

[VOOM] Great Newsday Article

I read into the article that the emphasis on local channels (OTA HD) will
be reduced. Great - it's a money hole. I guess D and DTV don't offer local
HD OTA either. VOOM is my first satellite experience and it was solely for
non-commercial HD programming. I have SD digital cable and SD digital cable
is worse than analog cable to my eyes. The pixelation using my JVC S-VHS
VCR with digital enhancements results in a worse picture, not better. In my
opinion, digital SD cable has less resolution than analog SD cable.
Sorry I mentioned Comcast, I meant Cablevision.
Everyone should read today's Newsday article. Hopefully, Dish needs more
satellite capacity and could use some of VOOM's equipment and will buy them
out.
I also hope we will be grandfathered in or be given some good deal. I'm one
of those "Early Fools" that paid $800 bucks up front but I get free HBO,
all for $39.90 a month for my "Pioneer" guinea pig efforts.
What do you say--"At the time, it seemed like a good idea"
