What is the cheapest plan to keep the DVR?

As long as you disconnect the receive from the satellite feeds prior to Dish Network sending a kill signal to the DVR then playback functions should continue to work (2+ years for me) - even my external storage continued working, but I haven't tried it in more than a year. I have no idea if DVR playback would continue to work if you were to leave your received "connected" after terminating service. Every few months I'll plug-in my 622s (at least two of them) and watch some old VOOM MonstersHD movies and EquatorHD recordings.

Would you be willing to try it out for those of us that are curious if the EHD still works? I have 10 EHD's of stuff I'd rather not lose.

others report the receiver MUST be on the sat feed for EHDs to work.

I can tell you this when i cancelled service i still got 33 channels and recording still worked.

mostly junk channels, like barkers and shopping, but some no doubt low cost movie channels one had porn, a linedancing group of topless gals...... bouncing along

dish pause is (last I checked) $5 a month and can have it up to 6 months
Well, that might be my best option then. So, I can try other services without canceling Dish and hopefully without losing my DVR recordings. Great!

Does anyone know if the Dish Pause invalidates any promotional discounts and credits?
I understand that when you un-pause you can only return to a plan that is available at the time.
But how about some promotional discounts, like free Platinum for a year?
Will that be still valid if I pause my service, say, for a couple of months? Or do I lose it in that case?

Just unplug the satelite cable on the back of your receiver and you can see if it still works. I took my 722 camping and tried to use it without the sat setup and it will play recorded programs, but would NOT recognize the EHD. The EHD will NOT work, just the internal drive works.

I don't know? When it's pouring rain my EHD still works with no sat signal. Maybe the receiver still needs to see the LNB. If that is the case just go knock the dish out of alignment.:D

If you have locals and the two dish setup. Make sure you knock both dishes out.
Otherwise the kill signal can still come thru and screw everything up.
I still have an old 502 I just plugged in to see if it worked and it works fine.

I wonder how long they broadcast the kill signal, before they quit and it safe to reconnect the dish?
