It has certainly gotten much better over the past year, with some good additions, official and third party.

However, there are still some official apps missing to which there can be no third party alternatives. Some big banking apps for one. Also weak in the TV streaming apps on the phone side ( it does have netflix, hulu, ect).

Also, they (like android) need to tighten up on the junk apps. Sometimes these pop up first when searching for something, which can be annoying at the least.

The big new here now that I have read more, is the unification of the app store across the three platforms. Windows 8/RT/WP8.
Soon, from what I have read, they will have it possible for apps on one to run on the other. Now THAT is big news, and opens up the app race in a BIG way.
