World Cinema-HD: Fellini's Roma *** (1972, Drama)

Aspect ratio 1.85 : 1

Summary: Federico Fellini's 1972 ode to the city of Rome is far from a coherent narrative, but as a selection of images and sounds celebrating the famed Italian capital, it's dazzling and hugely enjoyable. Stylistically, it's a perfect bridge between the excesses of Satyricon and the nostalgia of Amarcord, and it showcases the true love that Fellini had for the Eternal City. Mixing autobiographical flashbacks with the travails of a present-day movie company making a film about the city (headed up by Fellini himself), Roma is an impressionistic tour de force, delivered via Fellini's unique cinematic vision. If you can't tolerate Fellini's larger-than-life approach, the sometimes-garish colors, or the circus atmosphere, you'll probably find Roma insufferable. But fans of Fellini will be in seventh heaven, especially during some of the wonderful set pieces--a music dance hall performance that's interrupted by bombing during World War II; a papal fashion show that's so surreal it must be seen to be believed; and a breathtaking sequence in which the film crew, tagging along with an archaeological dig, happens upon an ancient Roman catacomb and watches as the beautiful murals disintegrate before their eyes. Through it all, Fellini's passion for Rome (and moviemaking) shines through, especially in the film's climax, a dialogue-free sequence of motorcycles roaring through the city at night, a tour that ends at the magnificent Colosseum. At that marriage of past and present, Roma is about as perfect as cinema can get. --Mark Englehart

Epics-HD: Voyage of the Damned *** (1976, Drama)

B00002IJ3A.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Aspect ratio 1.85 : 1

Summary: This was not your standard passenger list. Some were concentration camp victims. Others just wanted to join relatives in Cuba. Some were wealthy enough to afford the voyage. Most left everything behind in hope they could escape German terror. The passengers are unaware that the voyage is a sham, simply one of Goebbel's propaganda exercises. This ship will not be able to dock in Havana and, when the rest of the world turns the ship away, the Jews will have to return to Germany. Just as hope has all but vanished, the passengers receive word that some European countries may take them in. Come what may, the passengers resolve not to return to the camps. Faye Dunaway, Max Von Sydow, Oskar Werner, Malcolm McDowell, Orson Welles, James Mason, Katherine Ross, Ben Gazzara, Lee Grant and Julie Harris.

Divine-HD: Flawless **+ (1999, Comedy)

6305781095.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Aspect ratio 1.85 : 1

Summary: Who could possibly be the target audience for Flawless? Walter (Robert De Niro) is a homophobic policeman who suffers a stroke while responding to gunshots in his own apartment building; for speech therapy, he starts taking singing lessons from his neighbor Rusty (Philip Seymour Hoffman of Magnolia, Boogie Nights, and Happiness), a gay drag queen who's saving up money for a sex-change operation. However, there's another story line that takes up at least as much time as that one, about a drug dealer and his goons trying to find money that was stolen from them, brutally beating up everyone in their path. Furthermore, the local gay community (in New York City) seems to consist entirely of drag queens and Log Cabin Republicans, and one of Walter's cop buddies goggles at drag queens as if he's just arrived from the middle of Iowa. All the characters--including various prostitutes, drug dealers, a hotel clerk who's a weaselly mama's boy, as well as the aforementioned drag queens and cops--are horrific stereotypes. De Niro and Hoffman, both extremely talented actors, do all they can to overcome their cliché-studded dialogue, but they never seem to be in the same movie. Written and directed by Joel Schumacher, whose eclectic career includes Batman & Robin, A Time to Kill, Flatliners, and St. Elmo's Fire. --Bret Fetzer

HD Cinema (106): Movie : The Chase

B00014X8DG.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Aspect ratio 2.35 : 1

Summary: An almost absurdly star-studded cast brings to life Horton Foote's story of prejudice, violence, and frustrated love in The Chase. When Bubber Reeves (Robert Redford) escapes from prison, a drunken party in his hometown turns into a vigilante mob. The news disrupts the birthday celebration of a local oil tycoon (E.G. Marshall), whose son (James Fox) is having an affair with Reeves's wife Anna (Jane Fonda). Meanwhile, a bank vice-president (Robert Duvall) knows his wife (Janice Rule) is cheating on him but can't do anything about it except spread a little misery. The sheriff (Marlon Brando) struggles to hold things together until he can persuade Reeves to give himself up. The accents are thick and the emotions seem overwrought at first, but director Arthur Penn (Bonnie & Clyde, Little Big Man) weaves the multiple storylines together into an unsettling finale. Also featuring Angie Dickinson and Miriam Hopkins. --Bret Fetzer

Voom cinema does put hdnet movies to shame in term of wide selection. I swear hdnet plays the same damn 12 movies endlessly month after month. cinema10 gives you 2,3 new premieres like every other day. Now only if voom would get better transfers and STOP CROPPING!!

So, did Fellini's Roma actually play? I saw it in the PG, but I swear that movie looked like the japanese brothel movie that has been playing a lot lately.

I agree I did not see Fellin's Roma. Another PG casualty... :(

Here's another shot at Fellini's Roma.
The PG was showing Fellini's Roma this morning, but the channel was showing something else. What's wrong with Fellini? Amarcord has been advertised several times on Epics, but we never got it?!!

Maybe because Amarcord is not an epic, and really belongs on 102, World Cinema? :)

Actually, it sounds very Fellini-esque. If he were alive, he would make a movie about this, with Marcello Mastroianni playing a Voom subscriber, pounding on his HDTV in frustration, trying to watch a movie that never quite arrived on time, while his mistress sulks in the corner.

At that time the WorldCinema channel didn't exist (or wasn't called that way) and all foreign movies were shown on Epics channel (122).

Fellin's Roma is playing (I think) but the PG is out of wack. It shows in the PG but not at the correct time.
Yes! Fellini's Roma finally made it! Though because of that messed-up PG I missed the begginning :( Hope they will show it again. By the way, the second movie on WorldCinema was not Ran as advertised. It was Madadayo. Also by Akira Kurosawa.

Sounds like PG roulette. :)

Atleast they are getting around to playing the movies that are listed eventually.

Still looking for the Producers, tho...
