Dish forges agreement with Nielsen

There is nothing that anyone watches that they need to be embarrassed about. Even if you watch porno half the day, who cares. You're a number to nielson...

Ratings are a joke. Terribly inaccurate. It's 2005 and we're GUESSING what people MAY be watching. It's why "Everyone loves Raymond" was on the air forever. Until every house reports ratings, I don't respect or believe the numbers because they aren't accurate.

This would be good if they knew what we watched because then perhaps they would get better shows that more people like on the air and figure out which channels nobody watches.

Yeah like Charlie Chats. :D

appreciate variety

I've changed my viewing habbits a few times in the last several years.
I've gotten burned out with some shows/channels, and found others.
So, if the channels I didn't watch in the first year went away, I'd have had nothing "new" to discover this year.

It's still a vast wasteland, regardless of the number of channels: 3, 12, 50, 200, 600.
But, there's always something new to discover right around the corner.

I don't see Nielsen being particularly useful/significant to the average consumer.

Oh, and I appreciated the Purple People Meter. ;)

Nielson isn't designed to help us...

Could you imagine charlie crowing about the huge ratings his chats get? Oh god i'm suddenly getting sick...

Ratings are obsolete now with Dual-Tuner DVR's anyways. 1 tv can watch 2 programs, and they don't get a half of the credit, they now assign 2 credits to one tv. How can that possibly be accurate...The whole concept is absurd...

I mean, if it's saturday it doesn't matter what's on. The likelyhood of me watching tv depends as much as what's on, as what's going on in my personal life. If it's raining I'll probably sit around and watch "Surviving Christmas" for the 5th time when I normally wouldn't if it was sunny...

Nielsen, the leading provider of television and audience measurement services, measures the viewing habits of TV homes including DISH Network’s estimated 11.4 million customers. The deal will allow DISH Network to use Nielsen Media Research data for marketing, programming and sales research purposes. DISH Network can use the data from Nielsen to guarantee advertisers a specific number of viewers for their advertisements.

People, please reread this paragrarph. Nielsen is already measuring Dish network viewers. Dish is not going to be sending anything to Nielsen. This agreement lets Dish get the numbers back from Nielsen to be used for mainly advertising purposes. This agreement would also lets Dish use the Nielsen name when reporting the facts to advertisers.

And again, if you don't want to participate with Neilsen, then say "no thanks" if they ever ask you too.

This may explain the extra $5 monthly charge on some receivers if they are not connected to a phone line.
I would actually prefer having my viewing habits included in Nielson data. With so much crap on the airwaves it seems like Nielson ratings are telling programmers that they need to broadcast more sex, violence and profanity to get more $$$ from advertisers.

Ahhhhrrrggghh. What is so hard to understand? Dish is sending data to Neilsen. Neilsen is sending data it already collects to Dish.

Maybe they've been sending the error reports over there too...

Wonder if nielson people sit and say "What's a check switch?"

This whole thread is gotten ridiculous. No one should care what nielson looks at, or how dish sells advertising when so many of us just skip the damn commercials anyways (Which i'm sure advertisers won't like to see that data...). All it's going to do is get more product-placement inside our tv shows so why they can't just do it and stop doing "research" I don't know...

Maybe if they got rid of commercials, and just went 22 straight minutes of show, people wouldn't be tempted to flip off the channel to check other things. If they're hooked they won't care to check the score for another 15 minutes, give us content not f**king tampon commercials...

...sorry ladies, but they have no purpose. If you don't know about tampons I don't know what you think a commercial is going to teach you. You can't determine if it's going to help your 'heavy-flow' days from a commercial...

Of course, commercials don't exist to let you know that products like tampons are available. They exist to get a specific products name in your mind so when you go shopping, you are more likely to chose it.

For some reason, product placement in shows bugs me. I know they have to get those ads in somehow, though.
