You haven't been paying attention.
Dish moved most of their MPEG2-HD channels to MPEG4. This frees up enough space for an additional MPEG4-HD channel for each one converted.
So, they now have space for 12 MPEG4-HD channels at 129:
- Transponder 31 (the strongest one) was cleared, so it will fit 6 HD channels.
- Transponder 11 is only half full, so it will fit 3 HD channels.
- Transponder 27 is only half full, so it will fit 3 HD channels (except that one was used today for History-HD so actually it is now 11 channels space available).
Dish also freed up a transponder on 110 by moving some SD channels around, and by removing some SD channels, and is going to use that transponder entirely for HD-PPV.
Given that there are not 11 HD channels available for Dish to add, it is certainlly enough for now. CNN-HD, TBS-HD and the 4 new Starz-HD channels should fit on transponder 31, leaving space for 5 future HD channels, such as The Weather Channel HD.
By the time 11 actual new HD channels appear, E* will have launched a new satellite.

NFL ST Superfan is a seasonal sports subscription package. If they televise six games one weekend, they will admittedly count it as six discrete channels even though they are only live for about three hours on Sunday during the NFL regular season.

I find it hard to believe that TBS-HD won't be up on Dish (and Comcast and Cox and D*, and everyone else) before the baseball playoffs start. When MLB let TBS buy the rights for some of the playoffs, they must have (*must have*, right?) insisted that TBS not only produce the games in HD but also be able to distribute them that way. FOX is good for baseball in HD and if TBS has to be in SD, I think MLB would get upset.
I have to second the opinion about Chiller. Why wouldn't Dish pick this channel up in both SD and HD? It would be a great addition and companion to MonsterHD. Movies and old tv series, what more could you ask for if you are a horror fan? Plus I have seen that Chiller is not exclusive. What possible reason could Dish have for not adding this to the lineup. Please Scott enlighten us

Dish didn't move SD's around on 110. They downrezzed and bit starved the MPEG2 HD's on 110. 4 MPEG2 HD's per TP!

It's not as simple as just uplinking the channel. It also has to be negotiated and that is almost certainly the most difficult part of the job these days.

My comment was in connection with the poster saying that E* had no room for more HD channels, not about how they made space on 110.
But what's next is clearly converting the remaining MPEG2-HD to MPEG4-HD which would therefore not require 8 channels per TP, since they only have 4 on the transponder.
At this point, how many subscribers have 921s and 942s (and no MPEG4 receiver) and are stubbornly just watching the original 5 HD channels ?
Seems hard to believe that the cost of free 622's for all those people wouldn't be one-tenth the value of two-thirds of a transponder's bandwidth (which is what they are losing by keeping those channel as MPEG2).
I still have an 811 and only get the original 5 HD channels. BUT, that will be changing soon, hopefully this month.
The reason I have kept the 811 is because I really only want the 722 when E* finally adds the Tulsa locals in HD. Found out we will have some extra $ here pretty soon, so I decided to go ahead and upgrade.
So is there a website somewhere that has an inventory of what is on each TP? I go to dishchannelchart.com all the time and they show which Slot/TP each channel is on, but if I want to see which TPs are free and which are full, where do I go?
There really isn't a chart like that. You just have to go by what they are licensed to use and what's up there. But then you also have to take into count what is broken on the birds too.
I'll post some new PDFs after the uplink today if you'd like. It might help a little bit to see the current loading.
That's a good resource of information but very difficult to see the TP loading since it is sorted by channel number instead of TP.
I actually had an Excel file with all E* TP on each bird, but only what HD channels were on each TP and rez. Last time I updated i was end of June.
Oh, I'm well aware of that fact. And I'll even give E* a pass for all this time when it's been uplinked but not available, because I know that FSN-BA was in the process of being sold to Comcast.
That sale closed last month. And I also note that Comcast Sports Net-Chicago HD was recently made available, so I can't conceive that it's an insurmountable negotiation problem.
I'm just sayin', with college football on and the Giants' season winding down (thank the heavens above!), now would not be a bad time to add it . . . you listening, E*?
