I've seen a number of DVB cards on eBay lately for about $50 shipped. Some of the auctions claim that the cards will receive HD channels. One specific model is a Twinhan VisionPlus VP-1020A. My PC is hooked up to a 42" 1080p monitor and PBS HD would certainly look nice on it. Though I wouldn't bother with the card if it wouldn't do HD.

Would also need to be Linux capable.

Welcoming all opinions. :)

I think the 1020A should work with HD, I have the Twinhan 102G and I can watch HD and 4:2:2. The main thing is you have to have the right codecs installed on your computer.

Take a look at this thread: VisionPlus 1020a

I've got 8 LNBs on my T90 right now with an EMP-Centauri switch. That particular DVB card only supplies 400mA to LNBs but I remember reading somewhere that each LNB typically uses about 100mA. Would I have to add some external power supply to the system to keep them all working?

I have had a 1020a for years now and it's been great.
DVB PCI is a lot of fun if you like to experiment and tweak.

I'll have to look but there's a mod you can do to add an external power supply but I've never had any problems. I've even ran a motor off of mine. The only time I've read about any problems they have been traced back to the PC's power supply. As long as your PC's power supply is strong you should be OK.

Usually only one LNB will be powered.

that'll be fine for mpeg2 HD, you should even have enough cpu left over to do deinterlacing, which is really nice if you can.

You're thinking of disecq. On a multiswitch, you could be powering multiple LNBs out to multiple IRDs simultaneously (part of the beauty of the T90).

Multiswitch (Not powered) would normally only power the one selected LNB. Powered Multiswitches will power all the attached LNB's but the load is not carried by your satellite card.

The only switches that I have heard of that try to power all the LNBs at the same time from the receiver is dishnet switches. Standard diseqc switches and multiswitches will not overload your card. Shorts may kill it, but not the LNB loads.

I recommend powered multiswitches, they appear to increase the signal, allowing more channels to be received.

I also recommend an external power supply for motors, they are good for the motor and save the card from the extra current drain.

Interesting. So what would happen on a non-powered 4x4 multiswitch if two different IRDs requested two different satellites (LNBs)?

I bought non-powered 4x4 switches, but they will be running to an Invacom Quad so I don't suppose that would be an issue.

Each receiver powers it's respective LNB, but only the LNBs which are being tuned. If they both tune the same LNB and polarity then the two receivers both power the same LNB.

Twinhan 102g

Good day to all mods and members ,

Anybody can help me find or post a software for my 102 g , i need it very much , thank you in advance .

I may be able to help you some with the Linux part. I'm pretty sure that card is supported, but I have not used it. My card is a Kworld DVB S-100, with a Conexant CX88 chipset.

DVB support is in the kernel. You will need to enable v4l2, dvb, i2c, and support for your particular chipset. There is no external driver to install. You will need a viewer program, such as mplayer or kaffeine. You will also need a way to move the dish, kaffeine can do this, or a standalone program like xdipo.

A decent DVB card can certainly tune in PBS-HD (my favorite channel), but whether it is watchable depends on many things. You need a good video card (at least Nvidia 6200 or comparable), and a fast cpu ( I have 3ghz and it's not overkill). There have been recent big performance improvements in xorg-server, 1.4 runs WAY faster than 1.3. I have a widescreen monitor and watch tv directly on it, but a good video card should be able to drive a high-def tv like yours.

Good luck and happy viewing!

Can you post here bda *.log file from your install folder of DVBDream. It will help track and fix any bugs.
