Maybe a silly question, but I got to ask.

I searched all over before asking this. I even searched in google . . .

When I check the Signal strength for 110 it only shows 3 transponders.

I saw some old post about needing a SAT C kit in the old days to add a couple of HD channels and the Triple LNB Dish

But why do they only own 3 licenses? How did they managed to get 3? Why do they seems to be in the middle of Dish networks transponders numbers.

I see on 119 DirecTV has some but they are in the end of the transponder list.

For 110 they are in the middle number and do not seem to be in order?

Just wondering the why and if anyone knows the history of how they got them.

For even more history, how did they get the Transponders on 119 which seems to be a Dish Network sat?

Do Dishnetwork and DirecTV Share the SAME sats?

Actually DirecTV has a license for TPs 28, 30, and 32 on the 110 satellite. Exactly why only 3 I can't answer. The special LNB (Sat C Kit) for 110 changes the frequencies down to TPs 8, 10, & 12 respectively. These are then merged with the TPs from 119 which DirecTV only has licenses for 22-32. This way it made it easier for the receiver to select either the 101 or the 110/119 set of TPs.
The Phase III and now the Slimline have this functionality integrated into the LNB assembly.

Primestar was never at 119. They were at 85 and then 89W

Just to check my memory, looks like they had the licenses at least according to some posts that I found like Communication Satellites - Google Book Search or at SkyREPORT.com - Satellite Industry Daily News, Information, Data and Research for direct-to-home, DBS, C-Band, Local Channel, Broadband, High Speed Data, PVR and Interactive Television. it said 1999
DirecTV agrees to acquire PrimeStar under a two-part deal worth $1.83 billion. The proposal includes the TEMPO satellite at 119 degrees and subscribers

Found something interesting....I had printed it a while back and happened to stumble upon it

Back in 95 the DBS license were such
Directv had 27 TP's at 101
USSB had 3 at 110 and 5 at 101
Dish had 1 at 110 and 21 at 119
Tempo had 11 at 119
Dominion (Sky Angel) had 8 at 61.5

DirecTV, USSB and a few other companies that never got off the ground had slots at 148, 157, 166 & 175W

When DirecTV bought USSB and Tempo, thats how they got the 3 at 110, the 5 at 101 and the 11 at 119

In 1998, EchoStar purchased the broadcasting assets of a satellite broadcasting joint venture of News Corporation's ASkyB and MCI Worldcom. With this purchase EchoStar obtained 28 of the 32 transponder licenses in the 110° W orbital slot, more than doubling existing CONUS broadcasting capacity at a value of $682.5 million. The acquisition inspired the company to introduce a multi-satellite system called DISH 500, theoretically capable of receiving more than 500 channels on one dish. In the same year, Echostar - in assocaition with Bell Canada - launched Dish Network Canada.
