DVB-S2 capable receivers?

the technotrend S2-3200 and S2-3600 seem quite popular. aparently the usb S2-3600 version has a max of 30Ms/s (which a few others do as well) but the pci S2-3200 version can go above 30Ms/s

I d/l the manual for the Coolsat 8100HD pvr receiver, but what I got was only pages 31-66 of the manual. The specs page isnt one of those, so it doesnt say. It lists that it has 'autoscan' but that doesnt sound like true blind scan, it has the 'network' option during autoscan that says it downloads new transponders if it finds any. And manual scan, channel entry. But no mention of S2.

I just hate the fact that those STBs don't have blindscan. If Pansat would wake up, maybe we could get a box that does it all.

At this point, I'm really most interested in DVB S2.

The 9200HD is looking pretty good to me lately. It does HD and AC3, blindscan, PVR coming with the SATA port. But what I want the most is not available without an additional piece of hardware added to an already expensive receiver.

I agree Corrado. If I'm spending $400 on a box I don't want to have to spend even more to get it to do what I want it too. My old tube TV called it quits in the family room, so I'm shopping for a LCD HDTV, but think I am going to wait to buy a new FTA box until all the bugs are worked out.

I Understand that the Digiwave Diamond 9000HD-PVR do DVB-S2 and 'normal' 8psk. Once again no blind scan.

Please explain what you mean by "normal" 8psk? That's very vague and raises more questions than it answers. Do you mean dvb-s2 8psk? If so then I think that's no different than most boxes that do dvb-s2.

That is referring to non-turbo 8psk.

Okay but again that doesn't really tell us enough. There are at least 3 different "flavors" of 8psk modulation commonly used. That eliminates only one. Anyway, I suspect your likely referring to dvb-s2 8psk as I seriously doubt we'll ever see anything other than a commercial receiver that will receive what's commonly referred to as "trellis coded 8psk".

What about the Captain 8000 HD?
The description mention DVB-S signals but doesn't mention if it is DVB-S2 compatible.
This receiver is HD for around $300 and has a 5 or 6 years warranty.
If anyone has one PLEASE let us know! I am thinking about that one...

The captain can't even do mpeg4.... It has no dvb-s2... I can confirm it.

I have a Coolsat 8100HD that is able to decode DVB-S2 8PSK signals. Last July when I bought it it was advertised as being compliant with the new DVB-S2 spec but recently the adds for the receiver fail to mention DVB-S2. Maybe because of the confusion with turbo 8PSK which, of course it doesn't do.

Coolsat 8000 does :)
the Pansat 9200 does not :(

Here is the proof. Just took a couple screen shots of the Coolsat 8000 and the Pansat 9200

1st pic is Coolsat 8000 showing the DVB-S2 feed at 99 quality :)
2nd pic is Coolsat 8000 showing what happens when its set to DVB...0 quality :(
3rd pic is Pansat 9200 on same feed with 0 quality :(:(

transponder info has been blacked out...and I guess I cant have my light on in the background because it shows up on the pics ;)

Did you have to set the FEC or did the Coolsat select it automatically? I wonder why the modulation says: "DVB-S2 8PSK (NBC)"? NBC uses 8psk, but it's not DVB-S2.

North American MPEG-2 Information

the difference is the fec.

regular dvb-s can use 1/2, 2/3, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8, 8/9, etc but there are variations as well, boradcom has one called turbo-fec there are two DTH providers in NA that utilize this, no regular truefta that Ive seen though.

dvb-s2 is 8psk, its the same, it has regular fec's but then there are some variations, like trellis fec and again turbo-fec .

if a tuner supports dvb-s2, that doesnt mean it will also support turbo-fec or trellis, its accually highly unlikley. I have yet to find anything short of $1k that supports trellis :(

genpix sells a usb tuner called the skywalker-1, it supports turbo-fec, but not dvb-s2 or trellis.
