HomePlug built into the 622, How cool is that?

Hey Everyone,

I'm just stumbling across this and want to try it out ASAP...I have a wireless internet using a netgear wireless router. Will something like this work for me? I'm confused about the USB connection on this device (link below), do all of these have an ethernet connection on them as well as the USB or do I need to find one specifically for Ethernet? Thanks.

12Mbs Homeplug USB Powerline Network Adapter NEW - eBay (item 290209102674 end time Mar-01-08 09:46:03 PST)

This won't work because of the USB connection. The 622/722 do not support Network via their USB port. Just the Ethernet or HomePlug connections (and I guess dial up counts too to some degree). There are plenty of cheap ethernet HomePlug adapters out there. Just make sure they are HomePlug 1.0 or 1.1 and not HomePlugAV (reasons are described in the early posts).

I was hoping it was made a sticky as well. We have a sticky thread for a switch that probably won't even be released. :(
Yeah, no kidding. How did this thread get those little rating stars that I see in the forum thread listing? I don't see where we can "vote" for threads, and not many others seem to have them. Is it just based on the number of posts or views?

I voted for you. :) On the top there's a link that says "Rate Thread", just click on it and you can rate the thread.

And again,I should tell you and to others - as I pointed a few times in past - 622/722 DOES SUPPORT HomePlug device via USB, but only that device what have VID=09E1&PID=5121 (early one).

Just skip it and wait when someone will find a store and PLU for you :p.

Do you have maybe a manufacturer and model number.

I don't know if its a language barrier or an attempt at being cryptic, but I can't make heads or tails out of most of the things you say.

I did find out that the VID number you gave belongs to Intellon Corp.

So are you saying that the USB Power Line adapter plugs into the 622's USB port? Or into the router end?

I have that USB Homeplug adapter sitting new in box. I don't have DISH so I can't test it out here. However, it looks to me like that part would be most useful in taking a computer that doesn't have a NIC card but has USB and connecting it to your existing homeplug network.

I don't see any benefit to using this over a cat5 homeplug or even the receiver's power cord.

When I bought that unit, I was looking for a solution for customers who don't have a router but just have cablemodem/dsl connected straight to their computer. I was thinking of possibly hooking the USB to the computer and to the homeplug unit to bring the network to the power lines. However, I have my doubts that it will work because the computer would have to assign an IP to the DVR and I don't know if it could.

Sure a PC can run DHCP server software and lease up an IP address to the receiver. I do it all the time. Google tftp32.exe for one example (but don't run it on your lan at work ;) )

I was under the false impression that it was being suggested that a 622 could get a network connection via its USB port. Sure USB ports are capable of networking, but I don't think that Dish would write drivers to support that, especially after bothering to put in a Ethernet Jack and a HomePlug chip. And like you observed, no real benefit to USB over those two.

Is there a program that will do it? I'm not real smart on that stuff.

See post#164.

I just switched to Dish Network and got this 722 receiver and trying to figure out which way to go. I see this

Newegg.com - TRENDnet TEW-450APB 108Mbps 802.11g Wireless Access Point - Retail

at NewEgg. Would any wireless access point work with the receiver as long as it has the ethernet connection and match my router?

I guess I prefer this method over the homeplug because I really want to keep my 722 plugged into my UPS.

Thanks for the help.

Well, if you want to use the UPS, you can still take advantage of homeplug (to keep from having to run a Network cable to your 722) by using a HomePlug adapter and just connect it to your ethernet jack.

I have UPS's (APC brand, I think) on a 622 and a 722 at opposite ends of the house and the home plug recognizes the other machine through the two. So try it first. They are also on the same phone circuit but only the 722 has Ethernet and their TVs are on the surge-only side, at least the 622+CRT HDTV. Those connections shouldn't matter.
Of course they are also connect thru the Dish DPP42 switch, too.

So, I'll have a Homeplug on both ends both with an ethernet cable?
Yes, it will look like this.

Thanks, I picked up a set of two tonight on Ebay for $50. I'll start with one but have the second one if needed.

Thanks for all your help.
