Dish 721 error smart card not authorized...

I'd have to agree with navychop here. My 721 has given my 5+ years of good service. How much longer would I expect a hard-drive based piece of electronics (that is used pretty much every day) to last? I've been thru 2 heavily-used laptops in that time. I do have a much-used desktop PC that is older, but, in general, the 721 has pretty much given me the service that I expected. I bought mine outright, and at 5+ years old, would not expect ANY company to replace it in such a way that it didn't cost me something.

In my case, if it keeps acting up, I'm going to get a 722 to replace it - good incentive to go ahead & get the 2nd HDTV for the bedroom :).

I think the point a lot of folks have are that the 721's themselves should be working fine. The bug was something they introduced into them. Had Dish not done so, no one would be complaining (or not as much).

If they induce a problem into the unit, they should fix it or replace it at no increased cost to the consumer. They broke it, it's their fault. It wasn't equipment failure.

If the unit just died from a failed hard drive, then you have to follow what options they offer as with any other unit.
And no, I am not suggesting to them to just kill the hard drives to get the units out of circulation.

Should they completely lose the suit against Tivo, what are they going to do, turn off our boxes and say too freakin bad?

Send a me box and say I have to pay X amount extra every month because they infringed on someone else's property? That will go over well.

They seemed to have fixed this particular issue, so I can't complain about that. I'll worry about the next thing when it happens.

Hopefully all the changes on the uplink page will fix the problem.:)

There were no changes on the uplink page when the problem occurred (May 5th).

The change had to be either:

- A change in the MPEG2 data due to new encoder software

- A change in the EPG data.

Neither the original change, nor the fix, would show up in the satellite tables.

Actually, there is no way to get agree with a person who is silently proposed to pay other person against his will. :(
Particularly, for that mythical "DVR fee" popped like a jack from a box after replacing 40/80 GB to 120 GB in 501/508 models without adding new functionality.
Same happened for 921 after 721 with no 'DVR' fee.

I agree with this. If the box would have died due to no fault of their own after all these years then that is one thing but to be forced into having to get another box with additional fees due to an issue that THEY HAVE is SOMETHING ELSE! Why should I have to pay for their faults? No way! I am NOT paying for their mistakes! FORGET IT! They can at least give me at least half the credit of what I paid for the box on an OWNED RECEIVER or credit on my bill. I pay enough in fees as it is. This would really prove how they value a long-term customer. Heck, I paid for the 721 myself and paid full price for it which means they did not have to subsidize any money towards me getting it. You have to draw the line somewhere and that is where I am drawing the line. If they want to be buttholes about it then they do NOT need my business and I WILL take it somewhere else.

Personally, I expect my 721 to continue to work as it currenlty does, because I have been paying an extra $1 or so each month for the extended warrentee (At least I think I am)
As long as I am paying that, I expect my machine to be fixed at no cost to me. Swapping out my unit for one that requires additional fees does not live up to the warrentee (but who knows, there is probably some sort of clause in there that will let them wiggle out of it)

BTW, I just got the same, channel not authorized error about 10 minutes ago :(

The old one or two dollar plan was discontinued. I was moved to the $5.99 DHPP plan in it's place. Still, no complaints.

Same here. Its a bit overpriced IMO, but since I also have an old 7200, I want to hang on to it in case it gives up the ghost. Funny, I had replaced by 721 3 times with this last incident, I've only had to replace my 7200 once and that was several years ago. Of course its as slow as molasses, so I almost wish it would fail now. Can't imagine they have any more of those around.

No - 501s and 508s that are not already on a user's account cannot be authorized, due to the TiVo injunction.

The only SD DVRs that E* can give to customers are 522s and 625s (which are almost identical anyway).

501s and 508s have the new software, and aren't the ones Dish decided to drop. The only models that can no longer be activated are the 721, 921, 942 and 1022.

Anyone having any issues with their 721's since the "FIX" occurred??

Dish signal is perfect, but (according to error message) I keep losing channel lock?

I'm still having the same issue. What fix ocurred? My SW version is still the same. It doesn't lose sound as often as it did, but it still occurs sometimes and also loses lock.

I shouldn't say anything because I will probably jinks myself. But I haven't had any problems for a while now :). Hopefully it will stay this way. L326 is the SW Ver I have. Not sure if its the same one as before or not.

I have the same problem with my 501.

Your smart card not authorized to view this channel" message.

My 721 lately has been having issues staying locked on the local channels at times (from 129) but my other receivers do not have an issue. It does not have the smart card issue anymore but this issue shows up instead now.
