Echo II gone?! (CONFIRMED) (Echostar 2)

I don't know where you came up with the idea that E2 was 2 years older than its expected life.

If you check here ECHOSTAR SATELLITE BROADCASTING CORP Securities Registration Statement (S-1/A) SUMMARY FINANCIAL DATA You will see that E2 had an expected life of 2011.

According to that filing it died two months early :p

The expected end of commercial life of each satellite has been estimated by
EchoStar based on each satellite's actual or expected launch date and the
terms of the construction and launch contracts. The minimum design life is
12 years.

EchoStar II
Technical Summary and Satellite Overview
The company's second DBS satellite, EchoStar II, was successfully launched on September 10, 1996.

If they had the satellites to do it, its not a bad idea as it opens up Satellite service for many here in the east that cant currently get Dish Network or DirecTV.

However with them trying to turn space junk into space gold is just wrong its only going to cause them issues.

Again it would be a great idea if they had the satellite fleet necessary, but now they don't. Its time to kill the idea before they sink anymore money in it and consider start upgrading folks to MPEG4.

Maybe Echostar can buy DirecTV 1-R since DirecTV is losing the 72.5 slot anyways.

My problem with EA is the wasted bandwidth. I hate seeing all those national HD channels being sent twice.

It may be unavoidable.

A more efficient system would give everyone 1 dish for 110/119/129 (nationals), and a 2nd (wing) dish for locals.

Unfortunately, for marketing purposes, it seems the general public wants a 1 dish system + locals.

As you might have seen another site would not permit discussion of this topic as they felt this rumor was to cause panic.

As you know now this rumor has proven to be true and I am proud that folks discusse the topic here intelligently. This is what seperates us from other sites.

I'm sorry Scott, but you sound like a politician.

This thread is one of the least intelligent discussions in the history of DBS.

I'm not sure that closing discussion is the right move, but certainly I've seen more intelligent discussions of Britney Spears than of E*2.

Nothing anyone said in the thread made any sense, nor did any statement add one iota to our understanding of the situation. Most of the thread caused an increase of disinformation....

Actually, I thought the FCC or Congress had dictated that they can't use a 2nd dish for locals.

But when you made your statement on the podcast, the satellites you were referring to are the same "space junk", of which one just died.

Your comments are not conducive to anything, kstuart. It makes one wonder, just what are your intentions...? You're not respectful of Scott's relationship(s) with Dish/Echostar, nor mindful of how and when he's able to comment. Remember, without his established connections, there would be much we wouldn't be privy to.

If you want to live in the world of denial, please do so on your own. Newbies have a hard enough time trying to comprehend discussions here, and you don't help matters, one iota.

To debate, exchange ideas, observations and data, does not promote disinformation.

I don't know if you woke up on the wrong side of the bed today, but you're being exceptionally negative.

In other words, don't shoot the messenger.

Okay, we'll do that so long as you don't put someone down for making a statement that's later proven to be true ! Just because you apologized later for your error doesn't negate what you originally said.

You are correct. It was more of a reaction based on patterns from first time posters. I should give them the benefit until they actually show that their intentions were wrong.

Not true. One can realize they were wrong and admit too it, thus negating what was said originally.

EchoStar Communications Corporation - Current Report

Echo2 total loss...

On July 14, 2008, our EchoStar 2 satellite experienced a substantial failure that appears to have rendered the satellite a total loss. EchoStar 2 had been operating from the 148 degree orbital location primarily as a back-up satellite, but had provided local network channel service to Alaska and six other small markets. All programming and other services previously broadcast from EchoStar 2 were restored to Echostar 1, the primary satellite at the 148 degree location, within several hours after the failure. EchoStar 2, which was launched in September 1996, had a book value of approximately $6.4 million as of June 30, 2008.

I keep saying that Dish Network is going to have to PROVE itself when it comes to its birds.

Actually, I thought the FCC or Congress had dictated that they can't use a 2nd dish for locals.
It's all the locals in a city need to be all on one dish. They got into problem by putting the major locals on 110/119 and then putting the secondary (spanish/shopping/relegious) on a wing position. Those local stations complained that people with Dish couldn't get them because Dish wasn't installed unless someone asked for it.

I am James Long and that post is not allowed here I am going to delete this post

Oh my god what a nightmare for a second their I thought I was Jame Long I am glad that is over.

That is the difference between DBSTALK and here your post stayed while at that other site your post would have been deleted.

Actually, I thought the FCC or Congress had dictated that they can't use a 2nd dish for locals.

IIRC, the requirement is that all locals must be receivable on one dish. There can be two or even more dishes, but all locals must be on just one dish. I believe Dish put major locals on one sat, and "lesser" locals on another, making them less likely to be watched, as was alluded to earlier.

Right basically you can't give some locals preference over others. But if would no matter if they were all at one location (they could be split at 11 at 119) or if they were all at some wing that required another dish.

Look at it this way...

Dish Needed 3 Satellites to make Eastern Arc work, two of them no longer exist. AMC14 and Echostar 2. This is another reason why I say that they should scrap the Eastern Arc Project.

Also another thing to look at is the satellites delivering HD at 61.5 and 129 are on their last leg. Anytime one or both of them could die at anytime. Could you imagine the uproar if one of them died?

Dish has some big problems on their hands at the moment they need to concentrate on keeping the core services running, to add a second clone of its main service is unrealistic to me at the moment, and really does nothing to increase the income of Dish Network.

Scott, back on the Podcast, V1, show 15 you said that EA was "Amazing Idea" (17:50), and "going to be incredible" (18:27) and Bob said it was a "Bright Idea" (18:31). So why now are you saying "There is no reason they should need to run two seperate operations."? Yea, E-II's loss is a problem but besides that is there something else that is now saying there is no reason they should have EA? Just wondering what might have happened to change such glowing words about EA to no reason to do it?

Maybe he is all for the concept of an all MPEG 4 system and whether it is split and called Eastern & Western Arc or 1 system called "CONUS" Arc no longer matters.

Or, it's a mans prerogative to change his mind.

Just being realistic of what I would do if I were in charge at Dish. :)

So far the word coming out of Dish is they haven't even thought about EA yet, they didn't expect E2 to die.
