Echo II gone?! (CONFIRMED) (Echostar 2)

If they had the satellites to do it, its not a bad idea as it opens up Satellite service for many here in the east that cant currently get Dish Network or DirecTV.

However with them trying to turn space junk into space gold is just wrong its only going to cause them issues.

Again it would be a great idea if they had the satellite fleet necessary, but now they don't. Its time to kill the idea before they sink anymore money in it and consider start upgrading folks to MPEG4.

OK, thanks, just wondering the logic on the change.

BTW, IMHO even with EA there would still probably be people that can't get service for a provide because of LOS issues. Seemed like a lot of expense and not the best use of slots to have a EA, a WA and a legacy system, all transmitting a lot of the same programming.

If I remember correctly, they were going to transfer the E2 license to Quezat and run it as a Mexican licensed satellite. Probably as part of Telmex's plan to be a new competitor to Sky Mexico . They have just fullfilled (on July 5) their last legal requirement (telephone number portablility) to receive a transmission license. Failure probably will not have much effect on plans since the E8 has significant transmission capacity and is set up to provide coverage of both countries. Quezat (SES Americom - Mexico ) also has a new satellite on order so E2 was a short term filler.

If Dish wants EA to work, they can just as easily move 105 or 121 sats over.. change their lnb config a little and call it a day..

You can't move 121, there's this little thing called called Galaxy 23 C-Band attached to it with quite a few customers there.

Personally I think Dish should scrap the Eastern Arc service and start converting its main operation over to MPEG4. There is no reason they should need to run two seperate operations.

Certainly the costs associated with changing out all mpeg2 boxes is much less than a satellite. It would make sense to move to a completely mpeg4 system on current satellites. We'll see how long it takes for them to realize this is the best move. It will be a massive undertaking but can be done in a relatively short time (6 months?) to make it worthwhile.

From a business point of view, they need to protect their core customer base architecture at 110, 119, 129, and 61.5. That includes making sure there is backup in case of a failure and not using the backup for another project. If they want EA, they need to design and launch the birds for it and not play satellite poker.

Technically the E2 died a couple days ago or yesterday. They put up E11 today (1:00am) for some or (10:00pm). One went down and one went up. I wonder if people would be mroe aggravated if it was vice versa :eureka. Just trying to make a opposite point of view lol.

It's real simple, transfer everything on 148 to 118.7 for right now, until a replacement can be made or sit on 148 til the right buyer comes along. :eureka

Maybe I don't understand your post. Echostar 1, onto which E2's content was placed, is also at 148. E2's content was to be offloaded to E1 anyway in prep for E2's move to 77 as part of the sat shuffling for the EA project.

Dish's core is 110/119. In the VOOM suit filings HD looked to be about 10% of Dish's customers. Eastern Arc is not a critical for 90% of Dish customers at this time. Even of the 10% most of the HD customers probably point at 129.

Eastern Arc is for the future, it opens up a lot of opportunites for Dish, but if a meteor shower took it out today over 90% of Dish customers would not even notice. EA will give Dish a nice backup system, the main difference between the 2 systems will be locals.

Switching all the 110/119 customers to MPEG4 right now would probably cost Dish the equivalent of 10 satellites. They are going to stay MPEG2 for quite a few years. Once Dish stops installing MPEG2 boxes then we can start talking about a plan to swap out boxes.
