This is why this franchise will NEVER get anywhere. Until the old bastard is dead, because he will NEVER EVER SELL, this franchise, once feared because of how good they were and the franchise players LOVED to play for.....is the laughing stock of the NFL BECAUSE of Al Davis. How can the players concentrate on football when this shi** stain does NOT give his head coach the freedom of hiring and firing his own coaches??!!

The job of Oakland Raiders coach Lane Kiffin has come under fire again from the one person that matters, according to the San Jose Mercury News.

In late January, ESPN Senior NFL Analyst Chris Mortensen reported that Raiders owner Al Davis had drawn up a resignation letter for Kiffin a week into the year and asked the coach to quit.

Now, Davis is preparing to fire Kiffin as soon as Monday, regardless of how the visiting Raiders perform Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs, the Mercury News has reported, citing several front-office sources.

"You have to look at the history. History is what it is, that he doesn't keep people very long," Kiffin said Wednesday of Davis, two days after the Raiders lost their season opener 41-14 to the Denver Broncos in Oakland.

"He's not the guy I hired," Davis said in mid-August, according to the report in the Bay Area newspaper.

Speculation about Kiffin's status began in early January after reports surfaced following the season that he wanted to fire defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. The Raiders dismissed those reports and announced that Ryan was staying on as coordinator.

Kiffin was reportedly upset that he didn't have control of his coaching staff, leading Davis to ask for his resignation. If Kiffin were to resign, he would not be paid for the remaining two years of his contract.

"We don't have a general manager; everything goes through the owner," Kiffin said Wednesday. "That sets up a difficult situation at times. Knowing who the owner is, you know from Day 1 there's no job security."

Kiffin, 33, became the youngest man to coach a game in the NFL since Harland Svare took over the Los Angeles Rams as a 31-year old in 1962.

The Raiders went 4-12 in his first season in Oakland, doubling the team's win total from the previous year and showing signs of improvement in many areas.

But it marked the fifth straight year that Oakland has lost at least 10 games.

Al Davis is the cancer of this franchise. This franchise will not get anywhere until this guy, well......dies because he's not selling it.

They were never feared for being so good.

REALLY??!! This franchise was once one the most feared teams in the league. No team hit harder, ran harder and you were ASSURED a few of the injuries to the other team....and lost to the Raiders on top of that. Ask the Steelers, Dolphins, Broncos, Chiefs, Browns...all those teams with long history since the 70s.

I am gonna assume you were trying to be a smartass......

This begs the question WHO in their right mind would take the Raiders job now? Is Davis going to have to hire some ex Raider sycophant like Art Shell again? He makes George Steinbrenner look rational.

Anders....you and I have disagreed many times...but you could have not hit it more on the nose!:up

Who would want to caoch a team that has NO GM...and ALL player personnel decisions are done DIRECTLY by Davis....INCLUDING coaches.

Somebody should give him a swift kick to get some sense in him. He just doesn't understand that unless he steps back from making personel decisions it doesn't matter who he puts in there as head coach. They will not succeed.

I used to think Jerry Jones ( Dallas) was a nosey busy body. But what I have seen thae last few years in the Raiders is just pathetic. I think the only choice for head coach is Rob Ryan.

How about the poster child of nepotism...one Michael Brown, the warden of the Paul Brown Memorial Penitentiary in downtown Cincinnati. I don't know how has it worse...Marvin Lewis or Lane Kiffin?

Kiffin was DYING to fire that moron last year but Al Davis has a major boner for him, that that was the beginning of the clashing between Davis and Kiffin. This team will improve as long as they TRY to get YOUNG offensive weapons. I saw alot of different formations that I liked. I am WILLING to bet that 95% of the free agent signing would have NOT happend IF Kiffin had a say so. I could ONLY hope that the Raiders continue to improve and Kiffin keeps his job because I really like the guy.

I saw Kiffen in the post-victory press conference yesterday. He should have been all smiles after the ass-whooping they put on the Chiefs. Instead, you could see he still has a big weight on his shoulders, waiting for Crazy Al to drop the hammer on him.

Anybody looking for a good assistant coach with former head coach experience?

Broncos never feared the Raiders; they simply HATE the raiders. Its a storied rivalry. There is a difference.

He will be hired immediately....is coaching for the Raiders as tough a test as coaching for the fans and media of NY, Philly or Chicago...?

I second that!!!!!!!!

The key word there would be "once".:D
At least you got to say that in your lifetime. I haven't had that pleasure, and wont as long as Ford owns the Lions.
