I know the Directv DVR reciever may not be quite as nice although it may be better I don't know I know it looks nicer but they have a lot more HD and nonHD channels available at equal to or a better price than Dish Network who I've had for over 2 years now. I'm through with them though and I know that as soon as I call to cancel their service they'll try to bribe me into staying but the answer will be sorry but not interested. I've already scheduled the install for Directv. I'll be glad to have Fox News HD instead of CNN with their point of view on everything. I haven't even had the normal channels that the cable company offers in years because I couldn't afford the higher priced Dish Network package. BYE DISH NETWORK!

13 posts and you took the time to say goodbye to us... thanks... I think.

I'm not buying or selling Dish or Direct here but your statement about a lot more HD may be a perception more than a reality. There are some channels Direct has that Dish does not but the opposite is also true.

Right now the net difference is 1 HD channel but Direct may have the few that are really important to you (Fox v CNN, etc) that would prompt the switch.

When last I checked it was going to cost me several hundred dollars in install and receiver lease fees to switch to direct and in the end I was going to get about what I already had so I did not do it. But I am still open to it if one service really starts to blow the other out of the water again.

It may be too late since you already scheduled the install but take a look at this side by side comparison of HD content available on the major players:

Direct has NFL and MLB packages but from what you said about the cost of the higher tier Dish packages, this is probably not an option for you either.

Since when is one (1) HD channel difference "a lot more"? Direct has 67 national HD channels, Dish has 66 (as of 12/21/08 anyway).

Why do people feel the need to announce there decision to switch? Wouldn't you post instead in the Directv forum about how you are comming on board and see if they can help with pointers. Maby he is insecure about his decision. I had a buddy who switched about 3 monts ago, and the grass is not always greener!

I love how that chart shows Verizon as having a total of 97. It may have a total of 97 HD channels but it depends on where you live and what channels they offer in HD. One area may get 35 while another may get 65. Its if the local office carriers it!

(bit me in the ass not too long ago, still paying for that mistake)

There have been several "honest" people who've admitted to the greener grass syndrome.

People are all different. Good luck. I tried searching for that rainbow with Verizon. Only to arrive to the conclusion that what I had already was the best thing.

Also with Direct, try having a 2nd HD DVR hooked up to the system without putting money upfront!

It's a matter of the package deals Directv has where you pay a certain price and actually get more for your money. More basic cable channels. Also I believe Directv does have more HD channels than anyone currently and they launched a satellite over the summer that allows them to expand even more. They're basically becoming the HD leader. But it's not just that. The whole time I've had Dish Network it's been disappointing. I wish you all the best and I know sooner or later every satellite and cable TV provider will carry most channels in HD but I'm going to give Diectv a try for now and maybe I'll switch back to Dish Network down the road if I'm able to but for now I don't want their system.

I install Dish for a living, yet have Direct at home. Direct has the HD channels I watch the most. If Dish really ups their HD offerings by the time my Direct contract is up, the TurboHD is a really appealing package to me, despite the coming price increase. I've installed and used Dish extensively, have Direct at home, and am happy with both services. :D Good luck with your choice!

Well, posting a "Switching to DirectTV" thread in the Dish Network forum kinda begs for a response like this.

I'll say it again. I've had both services. E has better hardware.. the gap is not as much as some here would like you to believe, but it is better. When it comes to programming, D leads the way. They will have the channels you want (specifically sports) and you dont have to worry about constant contract disputes.

Directv is also higher than DISH. THat is why they don't have the disputes ,because they are willing to pay whatever they want and pass it on to their subs.

Non-Premium HD channels you gain going to D* (most provide no HD programming, only upconverts): CMT, C&I, Fox Business, Fox News, Fuel, FX, MTV, Nick, Speed, Spike, and VH1.

Non-Premium HD channels you lose going to D* (all provide HD programming): HMC, Lifetime, LMN, Travel, WGN, WFN (OK, this one doesn't have HD!), and Encore (you get if you have AT250, not available from D* even as a premium).

The channels in this list that DO provide HD programming (not 24x7 though), CI,FX, Speed and Spike. Fox Business, at least to me, looks like the studio talking heads have HD source but it's framed by stock tickers and news, but it's a 16x9 image. Fox news looks like SD for the talking heads but also has the news updates on the bottom and right side of the screen. Nick does have a couple HD programs, the one that comes to mind is Star Wars Clone Wars, there's been reports of a few others.
