Panasonic DMP-BD35 and DMP-BD55

oops, did not mean to 'send' yet...

Post #291 (yesterday 9:15pm) describes the problem and hook ups I tried to make it work (no sound).

I just woke from a nap trying to get a clear head to 'go back in' (well behind anyway) ;). First, some manual studying to see if today I can make sense of it.

Ok. So you are using an optical cable am I correct? If so, turn HDMI audio off in the setup menu of the player and turn secondary audio on. Set the DD and DTS output to bitstream. LEt me know. Also, did you assign the inout in the receiver? Always gotta ask.

Well, I currently have the optical cable from BD to AVR, and component video from BD to TV. This did give me sound. But I must be cutting myself short on the AQ and VQ I should be getting if I could get the 5.1 audio cable set from BD to AVR and HDMI BD to TV to produce sound.

I think you hit the point on 'assigning input' on receiver. I have not been able to see anything in the AVR set up menu on assigning the 5.1 audio input as the source for BD. In fact, the AVR display was showing 'two spkr input' last night when I was last messing with it. I'm back tonight to try again.

Any hints on how to assign 5.1 cables as source for BD?
Thanks for the help Teachsac.

IN BD55 manual pg 13 , 'F' "Connecting to 5.1ch Audio Out" seems to me to say turn 'HDMI Audio Output' OFF when "connecting AVR with HDMI AV Out terminal." In all my configurations with HDMI cable and 5.1 cables, I have had HDMI turned OFF.

Everything sounds right with the 55 setup, so you will need to go into the setup menu of the receiver. I'm not familiar with the Sony's but Denon, Onkyo, Yamaha, etc. all have an option in the menu for analog or multichannel. Many receivers will also let you toggle through sound fields either on the fron control panel or the remote. One of them is usually MC.

I now have and will keep the HDMI and 5.1 ch cables (only) in place, The DVD 'input' options on AVR are:
Digital Optical, Analog Input, Auto Input. NO matter the selection, it defaults back to Auto.

I think I found the possible answer. The front of the AVR has a 5.1 ch input button.
DUH, I never looked at the front 'buttons', just in the menus. doooouuh!

Before trying to play a BD disk, how should the BD55 set up menu be set?
Digital Audio Output
- Dolby D/Dolby... TrueHD : Bitsteam?
- DTS/DTSHD : Bitsteam?

- BD-Video Secondary Audio : Off ?

Any other BD55 Set Up settings I need to be sure are set a certain way? I have set them to my 'understanding' of the manual. My confidence is not 100% though. Now I will review the rest of the BD set up menu items, then try a BD disk.

Crossing my fingers it was NOT HAVING THE 5.1 INPUT BUTTON PRESSED ON FRONT OF AVR. I wonder if every time I switch to DVD on the AVR, if I'll need to press that button. We'll see.

I'll be back in a few minutes to let you know.
Would like confirmation on my bitstream and Secondary Audio to Off settings are correct for theHDMI and 5.1 ch cables (only) in place.

Doooough ! ! ! ! ! ! ! It WAS the 5.1 ch Input button on the front of the AVR. In my (weak attempt at a) defense, the button is real SMALL !

Can you confirm my BD55 settings so I know I am not sabotaging my player in some other way ( I have this history you know)? :)

Set Up/

A MAC address is already displayed

Thank you Soooo much for helping me look for that 'itsy bitsy' 5.1 ch button on the AVR! :D
NOW we will watch a movie. :D :D :D :D :hungry:

I did not set any sound settings for speakers on the DB55. Will the sound just be handled by how the speakers are set on the AVR?

Thanks and Happy New Year to all.
There are speaker adjustments. I can't remember what menu you make adjustments (I'm out of town for a few days). Change from 2 + 5.1 to just 5.1. You currently have it set for 7.1.

TeamE,

I have it set to:
Analog Audio Output : 2ch (downmix) + 5.1 ch (not 7.1)
the only options available were the 2ch + 5.1ch OR 7.1

Even if I could change and make speaker settings from the BD55 instead of where I assume they are still controlled by the (old) AVR, I will not bother making adjustments. My new Denon 1909 will hopefully arrive next week. Then I will let it do it's magic via Audesey. :D

That sounds right with the 5.1.

I would adjust the speaker settings in the 55 to large and let your reciever handle speaker size and crossover.

I agree. DOn't mess with it. Run Audyssey when you get the 1909 and let the receiver do the work. Analogs are a pain on most receivers, especially when it comes to LFE.

SD card questions...

The only reference I have found in the manual and online is that 1Gb is the recommended minimum size.

I wonder what the maximum size it will take? I think SD cards go to 16Gb.
Will it work with SDHC cards?

Mainly, what is a good functional size of SD card to install? I always like to err on the more side than the minimum side, especially since SD memory is so cheap.

Anyone put a card in and accessed BD-live? What was your experience?
Thanks,
Dave
