Houston Rockets considering trading Tracy McGrady

Two questions.

1. Would you consider him a good fit for your team?

2. Where do you think is the most likely place he'll end up?

No idea on either. I saw this coming last spring when the Rockets actually played better in the playoffs without McGrady. Why pay LeBron type money to Grant Hill 2.0?

Supposedly he has been ready to play for a month now. NO ONE will trade for him because everyone and their mother is trying to make room for the free agent class of 2010-11. AND like Anders said, he is making a ton a money and that would kill any salary cap.

That $22M in salary cap space makes him virtually untradeable...

Not as I see it. McGrady is on the final year of his contract, so whomever obtains him will owe him the remainder of his $20,000,000 for this year, and then he is off the books for the free agent buying binge. It actually makes his contract desirable, in that there are half a dozen or more teams that presently only have $5 to $10 million in cap space for 2010-2011, and would need more space to offer a maximum contract to a first tier free agent. The way they could do that is by trading the contracts of three veteran role players who have two years left on their contracts for McGrady. They only need to give away $16,000,000 in 2009-2010 salary because the trade rule allows for a 25% differential. That way, the team that gets McGrady's contract could then bid on an equal financial footing for a most desirable player, while the other team could plan on making its free agent foray in 2011-2012. Dallas might benefit from doing that.

I don't remember all the details of this, but I remember that when the Celtics traded Lafrenz, et al. for Ratliff, Ratliff's contract was more useful for future trades because it was to come off the books a year earlier than Lafrenz's. It is possible that the Celtics could not have pulled off the trade that got them Garnett if their offer to the T-wolves included Lafrenz's contract instead of Ratliffs.

Presently, there are more teams that have or can arrange enough cap room to sign the LeBrons than there are LeBrons to be signed, so some of them will be left with a pile of cap space that they can only use to overpay the leftovers. Thus, a team like Houston might find it more desirable to push its cap room to 2010, because even though the pickin's will be slimmer, there will be less bidding competition.

And if Gilbert Arenas is cleared of the more serious rumored charges and only warrants getting a slap on the wrist and being forced to wear a dunce cap, he could be traded one-for-one for McGrady.

That's because Isiah is down there, and he's still talking about the Knicks...:D

No seriously....everyone of the NBA folks down here have stated that with him here after the trade deadline, they know the team will stink, but at least you will have a name to "fill" some seats.

I wasn't aware Grady was in the last season of his contract. Since Detroit is rebuilding, maybe Dumars should be on the phone. Hamilton and Prince are very tradeable.

This is pretty funny. Seriously.

One onehand, since McGrady is in the last year of his contract, the Knicks would have nothing to lose by signing him for the remainder of the season. Especially since Isiah traded away the Knicks first round pick for 2010 and, genius that he is, he did not lottery protect it.

But this is where it gets funny...

The 'NBA folks down there', however, are obviously a little fuzzy about the Knicks' record. The Knicks are not 3-30, the Nets are. Newsflash...they're actually two different teams! Perhaps the 'folks' are not as NBA as they think they are. ;)

The NBA folks everywhere else realize the Knicks are actually one game out of a playoff spot, and only four games behind Miami for the fifth seed. Are they a good team? No, Isiah took care of that. And obviously should they make the playoffs, the Knicks are not advancing out of the east this year...but it's almost definite that neither are the Heat, or any other team not named Cavaliers, Celtics or Magic. The Hawks have only an extreme outside shot.

So I guess anybody else in the east should take a flier on McGrady as well. ;)

Where are you getting this notion that folks down here think the Knicks are 3-30...??

And for as close the Knicks are to the last playoff spot...last time I checked....the playoffs are MONTHS away and I don't remember them ending the season in the month of January. So when you hear mention of "if the playoffs were to end today"...it's for those with wishful thinking to do just that...wishful thinking.;)

When the 'NBA folks down there' made the ignorant statement that they know the Knicks will stink and will just try to fill seats. That kind of statement applies to a team like the Nets.

The Knicks will try to make the playoffs...they may fail, but as I stated they are not far away right now. Obviously it's only because after the Cavs, Celtics, Magic and Hawks the rest of the conference 'stinks', but the playoffs are still the goal.

Who said they ended the season in January?

The statement of "they are only 1 game from the last playoff spot" in January for the NBA is not different than someone say that their team in the wildcard race in the MLB in June or fighing for a wildcard spot in the NFL in week 8.

Do you honestly think that the Knicks brass NOT thinking bottom line for this season and actually thinking playoff? Really?
