Dish maybe trying to cram 9 HD channels per transponder according to the uplink report. If this comes true. It won't look good. So which do you prefer. More HD channels "now" at reduced Picture quality of the new channels and also your "existing" channels or would you rather see E* wait unit they have the room?

Dish it testing 9 HD channels per transponder. No need to get in an uproar until they have figured it out....

When Dish went from 6 to 8 HD channels on one transponder it took about 3 days before some one noticed that Dish did this and AFTER some one counted the number of channels on a transponder they started to complain about the PQ. I think there was even a poll BEFORE anyone noticed the change from 6 to 8 HD channels per TP asking what they thought of the PQ on specific channels. The vast majority didn't even notice the difference. :) Sometimes knowing some of the tech things make you see things that aren't there.

But, some people have the ability to compare channels to other sources. And the ones i've seen indicate a reduced PQ on E*.

If anything I have noticed an improved Picture quality on Dish lately. I want HD as soon as we can get it - the picture will be fine and even lower quality HD is better than SD.

Yes, E* made thier SD so bad that any HD. No matter how lite it is will look great. And like you've noticed. I too thought the HDchannels are looking better as of late.

I think the question of the poll is too hypothetical. It's impossible to answer without knowing, what kind of channels would be added and what effect on picture quality will this have.

In general, I would prefer the best possible PQ I can get. But there are some channels out there, that I would be willing to sacrifice the picture quality for. So, I can't vote without knowing the specifics.

Let's wait to see what Dish Network is up to and then we will judge them. :)

If those channels are additional capacity for NHL Center Ice or NBA League pass, I'll take crap overcompressed HD over crap overcompressed SD any day of the week.

How many SD channels did they get on a transponder when the service first started? Are we seeing as many HD channels on a transponder now as we did SD channels a good while back?

Yep and has anyone ever thought of the encoder upgrades going on? The encoders are way better now than what they were back when. Algorithms have improved, and so has pq. Id say go for it if you can get the same quality that you have now in less space. I just wish they would bump the resolution up to full rates 1920 though instead of 1440. This could also be the answer to the HD RSN problem.

No it won't stop exaggerating. It just won't look the absolute best HD.

Yes, i think it would be very difficult to take HD that far. Let's just hope they don't employ the same encoding techniques. Seeing the pixels crawl around peoples faces and in the background of my tv sucks. And that artificial edge enhancement or whatever they use is terrible too. And when watching "Juicy" i at least wanna be able to see the girls ***** clearly.

and if folks could see the "true" HD feed they'd piss themselves at how good it looks ;)

The thing is Ice that most people never saw a backhaul master. So they accept what they are told is HD is the absolute best HD. If they ever saw a true HD signal they would know where were coming from ;)

You know I get 6 HD channels straight from the source (an antenna) and with the exception of shows like The Tonight Show with (insert host name here) The PQ looks about the same to these lousy eyes on Dish as it does OTA. (CSI on CBS vs Spike HD) So I can't get all worked up about how "bad" the HD on Dish looks.

OTA HD is headed down the same path as the small dish and cable providers. Some of my OTA HD looks pretty raunchy from what it once was.
