oh
Just ordered DirecTV for first time. I got the promo deal that includes free HD DVR $199 savings. I believe I will get the HR23 model.

Now, my TV is older ESA 27'' with component jacks. I have my old XBOX1 connected to it using component cables. Can I use these same exact cables to connect the HD DVR receiver to the TV as well? Below is link to what they look like. I have a feeling I cannot as I have 3 connectors: 1 for XBOX1, 1 for PS2, 1 for WII. I think I need one with a HDMI end to connect to the HDDVR Receiver? If so, can you tell me what exact cable I need to connect from the HDDVR receiver to my component ports on TV?

This is what I got.

I am guessing with DirecTV comes to install, they do not include any cables? I plan on buying a new HD TV very shortly so I can then use these component cables for my XBOX1 again and buy regular HDMI cables for the new TV.

**I believe I found my answer. It comes with component cables. So it looks like I dont need to buy anything extra.

Yes and No. You can not use those cables that you have because the one side is only plugable to a game console. Both ends of the cable need to be the same plugs for the tv and directv box which have to be RCA type plugs. You can but you will have to set the DVR to 480i output because I can almost guarentee that your TV is not a HDTV. What is the model number and brand of the TV?

Yes, the component cables are included in the box with the HD DVR.
Your problem is that the TV probably doesn't have enough inputs for 4 pieces of equipment. Are all of your devices using component? In this case you'll need to swap inputs from one device to another or get a component switchbox of some sort.

Great! Yes, Im getting a new HDTV within weeks. So this is just very temporary. I just wanted to make sure I can still atleast watch standard TV for now and that it comes with cables.

So when I do buy my new TV (probably 50'' LCD HD) - I will have to buy HDMI cable for it? Right? I dont see DirecTV supplying a HDMI cable with their receiver.

Both of my hr20-100's came with hdmi cables.

For component you can even use a pair of plain old yellow/red/white video/audio cables. Use the red and white on one for the red-white audio connection, and the second yellow/red/white one for the component video. Connect the red to red on the tv and directv box, the white on the cable to the blue on the tv and directv box, and the yellow on the cable to the green on the tv and directv box. You can go with any color combo as long as both ends go to the right connections.

Worst thing that happens if you mix up the connection is the colors will look funny until you get it right.

HDMI cables are as cheap as dirt now. Just got an ad from supermediastore for 3 6' HDMI cables for $7.50. I buy all of my cables from monoprice because I trust their quality and the're low priced too.

Yeah, I noticed HDMI cables are so cheap now. Im wondering if I should just pick up a few just in case I decide to add a Bluray or PS3 or something

Actually you can't use the yellow/red/white because the frequency for the red and white are different than the yellow. I mean you can use them but you might actually see degredation of picture because of it.

Right, I never thought you can mix any old jacks with component either.

If D* comes out w/the receivers, the receivers (normally) do NOT come with any of those extra cables - the only thing in those boxes are the power cord & remote. The installers in these cases have a bulk supply of HDMI & Component Cables, & will give you whichever one you need. They are not top of the line cables, but they are OK & will do the job. They also carry at least composite A/V cables for SD TV's as well.

Bottom line - you really don't have anything to worry about; I'd just wait until after you get all installed before you worry about ordering more cables...

Actually the TV currently that Im using which will be getting the HD DVR connected to only has RCA ports. It does not have component at all. They still will be able to connect the HD box to it using RCA only jacks, right?

Maybe since I already have RCA cables and dont have component cables, Ill move to component TV to the location of where the HD box will go so the tech will give me component cables for it.

The problem with the component TV (ESA) is the picture is messed up (too bright) and thats why we brought it to the basement.

Hmm. I've seen some of the yellow/red/white cables that have a larger gauge yellow wire, but these are all the same size and are actually larger gauge than some of the cheap component cables I have.

Either way, I've switched between the HR20 connected to my tv with these as a component cable replacement and hdmi and dont see any picture quality difference.

They're actually the rca cable sets I got with my series 1 tivo about 10 years ago! :)
