Several jobs opening up in the Big East.

Penn - fired Glen Miller in Dec
DePaul - fired Jerry Wainwright in January
St. John's - fired Norm Roberts
Iowa - fired Todd Lickliter
Oregon - fired Ernie Kent
Seton Hall - fired Bobby Gonzalez

The Bobby Gonzalez situation at Seton Hall is just bizarre...but that's what you get when you hire a coach like Gonzalez...

Seton Hall beat Cincinnatti, Pittsburg, Louisville and Notre Dame, and, thanks in part to an otherwise soft Big East unbalanced schedule, finished its conference play at 9 and 9. That record doesn't ordinarily get you fired. It must have been something else.

Bobby Gonzalez goes out of his way to annoy anyone and everyone both on the court and off. Seton Hall knew what they were getting, as this is also how he ran his Manhattan program for seven years.

This approach (almost any approach) is fine if you're winning. If you're not, it contributes to you getting fired.

It had a lot to do with the gooning in their NIT game. One of Seton Hall's players hit a Texas Tech player in the groin, not once but twice, and was ejected. The Hall proceeded to get blown out, and Gonzo was fired the next day. Strange, but Seton Hall like a lot of BE schools are Catholic schools, and are run by priests. They tend to frown on thuggish behavior.

The punches to the groin and the loss were just the tip of the iceberg...

Also, the Goon was arguing with the officials that the player should not have been ejected as he had not done anything that is not standard for BE games. That showed he has as little moral fiber as the player who was busting the Texas Tech player in the groin.

Heard on the radio that SH was changing their team's name to "The Nutcrackers" after their NIT loss. :) Seems appropriate, in view of their playing "style."

Would the Goon have been kept if they had won more? You know it, guys like him are hired all the time and kept. Cincy kept Hugging no matter what he did, as long as he won. He was only fired after so many problems. Samson at IU was in trouble in OK but IU hired him, only to be taken down by the NCAA for his actions there.

Schools and athletic departments have no more morals than wall street bankers and those folks are morally bankrupt.

Somehow missed this one. Auburn fired Jeff Lebo last week, and is reportedly looking at hiring Tubby Smith.

Oh man. Wouldn't that be something when he comes into Rupp. He will hear non-stop boos even though they went to the tournament every year he was there. Tubby is a great coach, but as a recruiter he stinks.

This isn't a firing but Houston's Tom Penders has resigned. Kind of strange since they had totally sucked since he was there, and only made the NCAA Tournament by winning the C-USA Tournament. You'd think he'd try to turn that good fortune into a raise.

Early speculation is that Billy Gillispie might be in the running for the job.

He cannot possibly be considering the St John's job, can he?

He said that he likes a good challenge. Seems almost logical, so you know that it won't happen. I would think now he has Houston into a better shape than it has been for years, he would have logically stayed in that position, but then who knows. He will land somewhere, you can bet on that.

Penders will land somewhere, he's a lifer. Just don't see him going to St. John's, though. He and Looie had some issues when Penders coached at Fordham, I don't see the Vincentian Fathers overlooking that.

The surprising part is that St John's is willing to pay $3 million per year! While they're buying out Norm Roberts! This is good news.

Yep, the committment ($$) appears to be there, now it seems they just have to pick the right guy.

This link says Paul Hewitt from Ga Tech and Tom Pecora from Hofstra are being pursued. Both have strong relationships with the top area AAU and prep coaches, which Roberts did not have....

The Fathers say this every time they look for a coach, they claim they found the guy to tap into the feeder programs...and when he's fired they say he failed at that...
