Hi all...

I'm getting a new roommate who is moving from his parent's home to my place, and he wants to bring his HD DVR with him as he has a lot of programs still to catch up on.

I know it's against Terms of Service to move my new roommate's receiver into my place, as it's still on his parent's account (and it's leased), but we only plan to run it for a little while.

Here's the setup:

  • I have a Swimline dish with only 3 tuners in use, connected to the in-house RG6 cable
  • The new roommate is coming from a house with a Slimline dish and WB68 multiswitches.
  • My two receivers are hooked up to the internet
  • The new roommate's receivers will NOT be hook up to the internet - it will just connect to the dish.

After we set this up at my place and as soon as my new roommate finishes up his recordings, the receiver is going back to his parents.

What I want to know is if I connect that new receiver to my Swimline setup, will DIRECTV know it somehow since my receivers ARE hooked to the internet and occasionally send info to DIRECTV? Or are we safe for a month?

(Also, I assume I just have to re-run satellite setup at my place so it detects the new dish type?)

Thanks...

To answer just your question:
NO, as long as the friends recvr is not connected to the internet or the phone line.

The internet shouldn't matter as long as his parents aren't connected as well. Although I have never heard of someone being shut off for having one receiver with a different IP address.

I would not hook it up to a phone line.

I really don't see a big deal with this, if you added another receiver to your account for your roommate, DirecTV would still be getting paid the same as they are now with it on your roommates parent's account. No harm no foul....

Thanks guys... I just wasn't sure if the receivers communicated with each other through the SWM switch, as I had heard way back that someone had one receiver with a phone line, the other receiver didn't have one, both were connected to an SWM and the receiver without the phone line had Caller ID notifications appearing on it! That made me think that somehow the boxes talk to each other, potentially write logs, and if that went to DIRECTV, wellll...

That's interesting, I have never heard of a receiver not plugged into a phone line displaying caller id info like that! Has anyone else seen this before?
