Just installed last weekend and installer took longer than I thought would take but was very professional and I was happy with install. The house is a new construction. Thinking ahead about video streaming such as Netflix, I had builder put an ethernet port at same location as coax connection. I did not have internet yet at time of install so I had not bothered connection my router to get the ethernet network going. The multiroom DVR was working okay until I decided to connect 1 of my 2 DVRs to the network today so the VOD could work. Now the other rooms (1 DVR and 4 HD boxes) do not see the recorded shows on the box that has ethernet connected. If I connect one of the other boxes to the network then it is able to see content. This tells me that if I want VOD on the 2 DVR boxes and also want to be able to view recorded shows on HD boxes that I have to buy a switch for each room (line for PC and line for Directv box)?

Please be more specific on your network configuration. Are all units plugged into the same router? Have you tried using a computer to check on your router network configuration? All devices listed as connected and have a valid IP address?

Let me break it down to the first issue. If I connect 1 DVR box to my network and it grabs an IP address, the other boxes then lose the ability to see programs on that 1 DVR. Is this normal?

Sorry if the first post was confusing. I know I was rambling. I was trying to hurry with my post because I had to leave the house, lol.

To solve this issue and kill many birds with one stone or to take care of all your receivers get the BoarBand DECA installed. So what I would do is have the installer bring you a DECA put it in the room where your router is plug it in. Then you will need a cable drop in that room where your router is that leads back to your SWM Switch. Once you have the DECA plug it in then one end goes to your cable drop then you plug the Ethernet cable into the DECA back to your router. This will get all of your receivers in the house on the net with all the features plus enable MVR to all of them as well. After you have done this just go to the receivers run the Muti Room setup give them their own name. Then run the internet connection test which should give them all their own IP and the test will tell you at the end that the receiver has a net connection. Really they should be doing all the installs this way it eliminates so much and gets everything for sure working the way is suppose too. Just my 2 cents. :)

If you have 24 series, yes. The internal DECA is effectively turned off if an ETHERNET cable is plugged-in.

As Poke says, you need an Internet Connection Kit (Broadband DECA with DECA Power Supply). That setup can get the INTERNET connected to all Directv boxes in the DECA cloud.

To get the internal DECA working for your MRV setup, you'll need to re-run Satellite Setup on the box you plugged an ETHERNET cable in order to re-activate the internal DECA for MRV.

are u sure for that??

Thanks for the info. Fortunately the house was built with an On-Q box where all coax, broadband, and phone lines come to one central point. At that location is where my modem, router, switch, and home server are at so it should make it easy to do.

Not for sure if it turns it off as far as the built in DECA if you plug a network connection into the port. But that just going to get a IP to that one receiver is all not the rest of them like it would with the DECA which would take care of all of them and would be no need for them to have a physical network connection to any of the receivers then. The DECA pass the net connection to all the receivers through the SWIM Switch which then hits all of your receivers then. But I do recall speaking to someone at Direct in their Advance support group and I did think they said if your did physically had a network connection plug into the HR24 with out another DECA somewhere on your network that somethings might not work. Again though not for sure but that is what I think she said but most photos I have seen even when they had a physical connection going to the receiver they still had a broadband DECA connected to their network. Got to remember everyone router do not have a built in DECA.

Yes if you plug an ethernet cable into the HR24 or H24 it disables the built in DECA

Yeah this is what I thought as well. Either way folks when you get your install just make sure they install the BroadBand DECA and it will take care of everything else.

Okay, I made the call. I have (2) 24 series DVRs. They advised me that I only need to connect one of these boxes to an ethernet, which I can, and that the other 5 boxes (1 DVR and 4 non DVRs) should still be able to pull up the playlist as well as the other non ethernet connected DVR shold be able to get VOD. They had me check some settings but never had me run through a setup. They scheduled a tech to come out since the determined it was not working this way.

Any suggestions of anything I can do before they arrive?

If it was me make sure they have a BroadBand DECA with them so they can get that installed. If not you run this risk like many have of everything not working the way is suppose to.

You must have a broadband DECA adapter connected to your Ethernet LAN to access the Internet. No amount of wishing, hoping or repeated service calls is going to change that.

Yeah this is why I advise folks to make sure their installers bring the DECA and get it installed.

The only real boggle is why they don't do it as part of all installations that can support it. It seems that it would be in DIRECTV's best interest to make as many revenue generating products as possible available to as broad an audience as they can. At what some of the VOD products fetch, it doesn't seem like it would take long to make their money back.

I certainly hope they meant the ETHERNET connection is a temporary work-around 'till they return. One important step saver will be to remove the ETHERNET cable and re-run satellite setup on any 24 series box that had the ETHERNET cable plugged-in. This will re-enable the internal DECA for MRV.

Just make sure they run a coax directly to your router and connect the broadband DECA w/PS there. I've also read posts where the installer used existing powerline adapaters or wireless adapters between the broadband DECA and router which should not happen in a supported install.

Doing it right will get VOD on both DVRs and keep all boxes in the MRV playback loop with unified playlist. You need the broadband DECA for INTERNET services and the Internal DECA enabled on the 24 series boxes for MRV.

Just a heads-up...

Wow some tech going to get back charged for not doing anything wrong since the OP didn't have internet service at the time of his install and caused the problem.

Now I am worried nothing will get achieved on the visit. Rep on phone was stating the 24 series has compatibility issues with the broadband DECA and it should not be used. They claimed it is built into the 24.

Don't even get me started on the internet issue. ATT was supposed to install Uverse internet that morning but when tech arrived he found fiber had not been run to the house yet. I had to wait 5 days before internet was installed.

Even if internet was there I do not think the tech was familiar with VOD needing internet. He even made some comment that he did not see whole house DVR was on the order but it was working before he left.
