OFFICIAL DISH / FOX ORDEAL DISCUSSION THREAD

Correct. I'm getting 2 of the HR24 HD DVRs. I opted not to get the AM21 add-on for OTA since... well if I can't get an extra tuner by using it, I may as well just go OTA to my TV and use it as a backup. The channel guide is still going to be on the satellite guide since I'll have locals on satellite as well.

You *could* get the AM21 just as a convenience so you have OTA and satellite in one guide. Maybe I'll add them later. Just didn't see a need right now.

thanks again - so if i get the AM21 - could i record two shows via the HR24 and watch one off the ota?

Good for you. Smart choice. I also will be sending back a DVR we don't need as soon as I get the HDMI cable I need to share one receiver with two rooms. There are just two of us here, and we never watch two TVs separately of each other. When the whole receiver increase started, it amazed me how many receivers people had that they did not need. Maybe if people started really analyzing their viewing habits, they might come to the same conclusion.

I edited my post since your response.

My edited post included the fact that two simple adjustments saved close to 30% on my bill.

The SD DVR that I returned had been in our household for 3 years. Which as far as I am concerned had already paid back the original investment for E*. Paying $17 a month for this in my opinion was good for E* but not for me. So E* gets it back and loses $17 a month. Not sure if E* can get the same return by redeploying a standard definition DVR in the field again. I doubt it.

The package reduction was easy. My family is being overwhelmed by content. We just added a second Netflix account (for streaming content) for the kids with a PG rating limit. They get to manage their que and are giddy.

Only if you have an OTA directly to your TV, but not through the receiver. One of the reasons I did not switch a year ago. With the new tv season, I have kept all four of my 722K tuners busy. Have fun in two-ville land if you go.

MSG wants to bundle FUSE with it's sports channel. E* started the mess by dropping FUSE earlier this summer.

Fox Contracts with other providers

Does anyone know when their contracts expire with Direct? Comcast? Cablevision? Cox?
if they re-up with those without a dispute it will look bad for Charlie.
Hockey has started and Basketball will shortly. Here in Oklahoma we have been shut out on our local teams. I pay for the sports pack and I feel we should get a rebate since so many channels have been taken away.

Well now that the main damage is done I wonder how long Dish will hold out. I would love it if they made sports an add on package like AT120/AT120+. I would love to see the + option for 200/250/AEP. I know, it will not happen because FOX could not afford to lose half their subs (or more). How many people would really consider watching their RSN if they could save $5+/month? I have been too busy to watch mine in a while. In fact I dropped the multisport pack a couple months ago since I lost the time to watch them all.

I guess I can only dream of Dish breaking the content provider's back and start taking baby steps to a la carte.

And... that rebate should be automatic applied both for multi-sport pack subscribers AND HD Platinum pack subscribers since they are giving all those channels away to everyone right now for free. But you can't even get your money back by calling them. They'll happily give you three free pay-per-view coupons, however. Like anyone wants an SD pay-per-view movie anymore.

Not quite, I would say from an interface standpoint. Yes you'll be able to watch whatever one DVR records on the other if I understand how DirecTV's Whole Home DVR works correctly. However from what I do understand you cannot set timers for DVR B from DVR A. So you'll have to go between the two DVRs and set the appropriate timers. Sure it'd be great if you could setup timers that would be negotiated between any number of DVRs on a network but that's not the way D*'s whole home DVR works.

It's during sweeps

Nov 1st would hit during sweeps. That would kill a bunch of ad revenue for local stations. Some would be really PO'd to lose that. So it may cut both ways:hurt E* some and hurt Fox too.

Dish kind of lucked out this week that Baseball season is over, and Hockey does not start up again till this weekend, if Dish thinks this is bad now, wait till monday morning when customers start cancelling because they missed their hockey game.

But this whole situation is irritating me, from what I have been reading I believe this whole issue is over putting Fox sports in Americas Top120, and Fox is not raising their rates for the channel but would be getting 50% more money from Dish if its included with the Top120 since 50% of Dish customers have Top120.

If FX was the only channel Dish lost, then I would really care less, just like I didn't care when they removed Disney XD, and Lifetime.

The problem is that if this is not resolved, we are going to have the same issue as we do in the New York DMA where customers can't see their Yankee Games. The fact of the matter is that Dish Network can't sell a system in the New York DMA if a customer is a Yankees fan, they have to go with Cable and Directv.

You take away the RSN's and now you have the same problem in a dozen or so more DMA's that are affected by the Fox Sports blackout.

#1 What Fox is trying to do is not right, by forcing customers to watch their programming

#2 I would normally support Dish 100% because I know they are truely fighting Fox on this issue, and want to keep the rates low.

However, we have already had 2 Price increases this year already, and based on what has happened in the past, we probably due for yet another price increase come Febuary 1st 2011.

The last price increase was the worst price increase in the History of DISH Network, when it came to additional receiver outlet fees.

I guess what im saying is that, if Dish didn't raise the prices earlier this year and would have froze them, I would be 100% behind them in this dispute. If its likely the rates will go up again in Febuary, so whats the difference if they pay Fox what they are asking to keep all their customers happy?

I don't know the details of the dispute, and I hope im wrong but this looks like a no win situation for Dish.

If Dish wanted to come smelling like a rose in all of this, they would announce next Febuary that they where not doing a price increase due to their hard negotiation tactics with programmers.
