And I also saw that it will cost him 300 to go to D*.
actually after doing some looking it would cost him a whopping $99 for 2 HD DVR's and 2 HD recievers

His market is a MPEG4 locals market (Lubbock, TX) so he pays for a SD receiver and get a HD in the process. SO
1st HD DVR free
1st HD reciever free
2nd DVR $99 (SD DVR's are $99 and he automatically gets upgraded to HD)
2nd, 3rd, 4th SD receivers are free
so I guess Jim5506 should re-evaluate his options

Why would he want SD receivers? He has 5 HDTV's that maybe where the other 200 is coming into play.
Maybe you're not understanding. Since his local market is MPEG4 only when you order equipment after the 2 freebies you order the SD receiver and you get upgraded FOR FREE to the HD version because his locals are on the HD sat only. None of his locals are on 101 or 119.
Its something that has been posted a few times in the D* area and folks have verified it. So when you place an order in a MPEG4 only market (the way to know is if you run a zip on the D* locals side and the channel is in HD and no SD version thats a MEPG4 market) you buy the SD version and get the HD for that price.

So are you saying the a total of 5 HD DVR's will only cost him 69? Or what is his grand total?
He mentions 2 DVR's and 2 HD units.....he's short one receiver for a TV I guess.

He'd actually have to go with 4 HD DVRs to get the same recording capability that he has now. He mentioned that he had the EHD service on his 211 receivers so that turns each of those units into an HD DVR (granted only 1 program at a time as opposed to 2) and he also mentioned that he has the OTA module for the 722k. So his 722k can record 2 OTA HD programs at once and 2 satellite HD programs at once (yes it can only playback in HD on one TV set) and each of his 211 receivers can record 1 HD program. So he can have a total of 7 independent programming streams going at the same time. In order to get the same number of recording steams with D* he'd have to get 4 HD DVR units, yes he'd be looking at 8 streams at that point but D*, to my knowledge, doesn't have a single tuner HD DVR. Even then he'd have to get at least one HD receiver to service his fifth room so he'd be looking at a hefty upfront cost.
I'm going by what he wrote in post 497 which says "To go to DirecTV with 2 HD DVR's, Whole Home DVR Service and 2 HD receivers". Thats what I'm basing my info off of

Sorry but most of you guys are comparing penny to penny and saying "I save $5 / mo" but you are not saying one thing about actual content or anything substantial or so niche it really isn't a "must have". I for one prefer to live my life by the substance rather than by each penny. Life is MUCH happier that way! If your budgets are just that tight maybe pay TV shouldn't be in your plans.

He has OTA for all of his HD DVR's I know what he has. So he can record 2 sat & 2 OTA on the 722k and 1 sat & 1 OTA on each of his 211k's. So he can be recording 12 things at one time. That's what he would have to replace to be able to do the same thing he is able to do now w/ E*. So the 297 you quoted is probably the 300 he is referencing. And since there are no Costcos around her we can't use the Costco credit.
Thanks for the info. It might help others that are members but I would have to join and doesn't that cost a good bit? Just checked and would cost $40 to join. So at the 180 I would really only get 140. So with the fact I would have to pay 99 for the 2nd HD DVR I would have $41 and that won't cover the price difference in programming. Looks like for me there is still not the big advantage to switch to D* Thanks for trying to help though.
Well, you also get the benefit of being a member of Sam's Club, and shopping there and saving a lot of money.
I'm single and the large quantities doesn't do me much good. That is why I'm not a member, but for those that are married it is good. When I was married it was a good thing for me too.
no the 300 he is quoting is for an extra HD DVR and a HD receiver. The system gives everyone the same price regardless of market. Once the reps process the order they make the necessary adjustment
So the 297 I was quoting him was for 4 HD DVR's and a HD receiver (well technically it would be a HD DVR, a HD receiver and 3 extra SD DVR's that get upgraded to HD automatically)
Yes for sure you would lose several channels, but my gain of some channels (1 being Smithsonian) offset my loss. Plus the HD looks better, not as soft as E*s. The other "loss" were the Sirius and other music channels! D*s music channels are "ok". Not to mention I'm saving nearly $45. a month on my first years bill.

I signed up with Direct, got the $180 cash card, I'm not a Costco member so these are my options: I can use the card online at costco.com with a 5% upcharge (not real impressed with the offerings online since they don't carry the food/household items online, but to each his own), or I can use it at one of their store locations, you get a one day free membership pass at the cust service counter (no mention of an upcharge for the one day pass).
I think the Sams offering is for $$$ off your monthly bill, not a gift card. You have to sign up in store or thru an 800 #, so I don't know if you'd be able to get the referral discount also.
The net result is pay tv is gonna cost more with the Absolute pack going away, so everyone has to decide what works best for them, and if you switch providers to try and get the best deal possible.
