Router issue with 50MB service

DodgerKing said in the thread in the pub that he created a DMZ and it improved things for him. BUT it seems to me that that exposes the machine to attacks, since it would put it outside of the firewall, and it would only impact one machine.
 
With having 50MB speeds you should not need a gigabit router. As long as your WAN port supports 100MB you should be fine. Wireless has to many variables. You may be using N but you might not have those speeds due to distance and what is in between you and your router.

I have tried it wired and wireless, and I have tried the wireless within 10 feet of the router. the Belkin wireless transmits very strong through the house. I would think the 50MB should not need 1000MB for the same reason you say. WAN supports 100MB definitely.
 
Mike, what speeds are you getting if you hardwire your PC to the router?

WHoa, just plugged direct to one of the lan ports on the router, and got 56. Will try it on one of the desktops upstairs in the minute.

Its the wireless. Now I need to figure out how to improve it.
 
I have a computer with a wireless G adapter, if the connection is low and run speed test I get very low speed (around 4-5 mbps). If I get a very good connection the speed test improves to 11-12 mbps. Just make sure your wireless connection has a good connection. If your router has that feature, you could also check the signal and your rate (mbps) for each device on your router.
 
Ok, ran the test via wireless right next to the access point. GOT 36. Did it again, got 32. Ran it up one floor, got 13. Hmm...

That's mega bit's not mega bytes! Most people think that it means bytes when that is false.. you may run into some confusion as to the differences between MBps (Megabytes per second) versus Mbps (megabits per second). Network speeds are labeled in Mbps, so it is important to not confuse it with the more familiar Megabytes. Here is a breakdown of some useful info:

1 byte = 8 bits
1kilobyte = 1000 bytes
1 Megabyte = 1,024 kilobytes
1 megabit ~ 1,000,000 bits, or 125,000 bytes
1 Megabyte ~ 1,000,000 bytes
 
Do you have wireless N and G clients connected? If you do this could slow things down for your N clients. One thing to try is to only allow N traffic on the router to see if your speeds increase. Also what encryption are you using on your router? This can also have a huge impact on your speeds.
 
Just ran it on my wife's desktop. Got 56. Apparently when the modem got recycled by Comcast and by me, it kicked it in, so it is working. BUT the speed for wireless is a fraction of the wired one. Need to research that and figure it out....

WPA-PSK, authentication WPA+WPA2-PSK

Set on G and N. I think there are G clients (Wireless for my kid's machine and for the SONY Blu-Ray (but need to check).
 
I don't think the modem is the problem. It is pushing 56mB when I connect directly to it.
I may be totally way off, but when we went from our 3G modem and linksys router to our dsl modem and linksys router we had to put the dsl modem in bridge mode for it to connect properly through the router. Again I may not have a clue! :D
 
Is that 11N? What radio do you use: 2.4GHz or 5GHz?

Wireless is on 20/40Mhz, Protected mode off. Wireless N for my machine. Wireless channel 1. Changed channels a month ago, and eliminated microwave interfernce, so I am guessing it is on 2.4.

QoS is currently off.
 
Try and set your router to just use N as a quick test. I am really wondering if your G devices are having a negative impact.
 
There is a nice Android app, WiFi Analyzer.
It shows signal strength on each channel (including 13 and 14).

Can be very useful...

Temporarily disabled Wireless security, made no difference. Turned it back on. :)
