Ipad or kindle?

Spent a week on the beach in Maui. Saw probably 50 people with kindles sitting by the pool. Did not see a single nook, and only two ipad's, in both instances the person was tring to cover it to see the screen. And pretty much struggling.

Me, I left the ipad in the room, and used the kindle. :)

While playing golf yesterday, my playing partner asked the question that is presented here. His wife wanted something to read ebooks on and was tossed between the Kindle/Nook/iPad. I told him that she needs to decide where she is going to do the reading. If out in lots of direct sunlight, then the iPad isn't a good choice, but otherwise, it is probably the best choice for other lighting conditions.

When he gets back from a road trip, I'm going to loan him my Touch and Nook and let his wife see the difference between the types of screens and how it fits her reading preferences.

That is one thing I don't like about my iPad, the inability to use it outside

Someone told me there was some sort of screen cover doo-hickey that is supposed to help in high light situations. I don't know what it is and frankly don't think that any cover would really help.

For me, outdoor reading isn't on my list of things to do. Most of the time when I'm outside I'm either going somewhere or I'm on the golf course.

I sit out by the pool all the time with mine but my poolside is in the shade. I don't sit in the sun, too hot and too much U/V. Suffering these days with skin cancers from when I didn't know any better.

Just not very useful in the sun. I went out with the iPad this morning, but even with no direct sun, the glare from the glass screen made it hard to use.

I use my Kindle pretty much when I am outdoors, but the iPad or Tab when I am indoors (both are more convenient). although if I don't want to be distracted by web, satguys, email, twitter, and just want to read, then the kindle is perfect.

Now, you stay out of the sun!!! You picked the wrong state to live if you are dealing with skin cancer though.

I can barely see the screen in the shade. I see more reflection of things in the device than the image on the device. And the image is extremely dark, and this is in the shade. Directly sunlight, forget about it all together

You have to crank the brightness to have any chance of using it outside in a meaningful way, and god forbid you have sunglasses. :) (Which is a problem for me since with contacts, I really need good polarized lenses when outside, and that wipes out the ability to read the screen.
