How do I change the remote to either IR or RF mode? I don't know what mode it's in now. I only just got it today. It's fresh out of the box.

Follow these steps to program remote two to DVR two, make sure DVR one is off, and the tv is on DVR two.
With the remote pointing to the DVR press Menu, System setup, System setup, Remote control, Program remote, Ok continue, Advanced, IR/RF setup, RF, Mute + select, 961, Chan up, enter the six numbers on the screen (they are the last six numbers of your DVR), Select. Remote two and DVR two should now be in ir mode.

Thank you! Both remotes are RC65RX.
If I program one remote as you say above, the other remote will still operate both DVRs, I think. Or am I also changing something in the DVR itself so it only reads one remote? What do I put the selector switch on? The DirecTV logo, AV1, AV2 or TV?
Ideally I'd like one remote that operates each DVR separately. If that means I have to move the switch at the top to operate the remote when I want to use a different DVR, that's fine. Is that possible? If so, how?
Otherwise, if I have to have one remote per DVR, that's okay. To do that, do I follow the directions above for each remote/DVR?

OK. Let me suggest that you set them both up in RF mode. This way the remotess will definitely align to their individual receiver. (You can use those little dice stickers that came with your setup to distinguish between each remote.) Take the remote you want to use on receiver 1 (turn off receiver 2 or make sure it does not get involved with the programming.) Press the "menu" button on your remote. The select the "Parental, Fav's & Setup" selection. Next select "System Setup". Next select "Remote Control". Select the IR/RF Setup and click on the yellow Remote Type to change to RF. Follow the instructions that are given and you will have programmed your remote to this receiver. Then just do the same thing with the second remote and second receiver. They will not conflict. Let us know if you need more information.
I think you will find this easier than the AV1 etc settings.

If you're going to use RF, av1 or av2 devices will not accept rf remote programming unless the devices were programmed with IR code 00001-00008 first.
It would probably be easiest to use two remotes here, both of them programmed to use RF. Put a big red sticker on the 'slave', that way there's never any question of whether you're controlling the right one.

Do I have to re-program my DVRs somehow if I want to use the remotes with the RF format? How do I find out the format the DVRs are currently in?
Gah! This is so stupidly complicated. I don't know why the installer didn't just set it up the right way.

I'm saying "should" to all of this because the RC64 remotes had stickers,& I believe my RC65(what you probably have) also had stickers,but they were different. It's really not complicated, it's just that you're trying to do an advanced setup when you really don't need one. Easiest thing to do is going to be resetting and starting over. We don't know what state you've got everything in, so let's wipe the slate.
In the Program Remote menu there is an option to Reset Remote. One DVR at a time, select that option and follow the onscreen instructions. If it says something about abandoning your advanced setup, press the DASH button (next to the zero). This will reset the receiver's remote settings to default and wipe ALL programming out of the remote, including your TV and stereo codes, but they are easy to put back. Once reset, go into IR/RF setup, set the mode to RF, then follow the onscreen directions.
Repeat with the other remote on the other DVR. (Make sure you mark them in such a way that you can easily identify them - like I said, a bright colored sticker works well).
The one you're NOT programming should be turned off and its front panel covered so that it doesn't get into a bind.

The installer just left the boxes sitting in the middle of my floor when he left. He didn't indicate there was anything left in them, if I needed to keep them or anything. I checked inside and there are stickers in both. Thanks for letting me know.
The installer also left clipped pieces of cable around, other remotes and paperwork on the floor and so forth. I think he was a hurry to get to his next customer.
I've unplugged one of the DVRs so I'm sure which one I'm using. I know that means I'll have to wait while it sets itself up again when I turn it on, but it's the only way I can make sure it's not in use.
I think you're right that I need to start from the top again. Thanks for the instructions to walk me through it. When I program the remotes again, do I leave the sliding thing at the top set to the DirecTV symbol, or do I move it to AV1, AV2 or TV?
My remote won't program as RF - and What's an RF Antenna?
As JerseyMatt suggested in this thread, I'm trying to change my remotes from IR to RF so each remote will run each DVR separately (I have two DVRs attached to one TV). The number on the top of my remote is RC65RX, which someone said should be an IR/RF remote.
I cleared the previous programming on the remote and then did this:
Menu
Parental, Fav's & Setup
System Setup
Remote Control
Program Remote
At that point the ONLY OPTIONS are:
Setup AV1
Setup AV2
Setup TV
Advanced.
People have told me that I should see something about choosing IR/RF, but it's not there. However, if I choose Advanced I get:
IR/RF Setup
Am I in the right place, or has the menu changed from what people are telling me?
Anyway, when I choose IR/RF Setup it says:
"Press SELECT on the option to set the receiver for IF (remote must be aimed at the receiver) or RF (multi-directional) remote input. Check that your RF antenna is connected to the receiver."
Then it says Remote Type and a yellow box next to that says IR. When I try to change it to RF, that option doesn't seem available. I've tried all the arrow buttons on the remote - left, right, up down. I tried entering numbers on the keypad (like 73 for RF), but there is just not another option. When I choose the arrow buttons, it sends me down to Continue.
Is something not set up right on my DVRs? What is the "RF antenna" that the directions mention? How do I know if that is set up?
This is so incredibly complicated! Why is DirecTV so complicated? I feel like calling and telling them to take everything away. I can't believe the time I'm wasting on this mess.

When you get to this screen you will see IR highlighted. Press your yellow select button and you will see 2 options, IR and RF. Scroll until the RF option is highlighted. Your situation has become more complicated than the "usual" installation since you have two receivers at the same location where they can both see your remote. You are also new to the forum and did not know that better information comes when you tell folks the exact equipment you have so that you can get the best answer the first time. We are all just trying to help.
You are so close now. Please do not give up and you will find that you will really enjoy your DirecTV system the more you get used to it.

No, I don't. I don't have those options.
Here's what I did:
Menu
Parental, Fav's & Setup
System Setup
Under System Setup, there is a long list of things on the left side of my screen. Am I in the right place? It has things like Info & Test, Displace, Audio, HDTV, Network Setup, Remote Control, etc.
I chose Remote Control
The ONLY OPTIONS AVAILABLE when I click Remote Control are:
Program Remote
Copy Settings
Reset Remote
I don't see ANY of these options that you mentioned: Program Remote, IR/RF Setup, Receiver Mode, and Advanced Setups, except for Program Remote.
I feel like a complete idiot, but honestly they are not there. I should take a picture of my screen so you can see it. They simply aren't there. What's wrong with my system?
I'm so tired, frustrated and dejected I feel like I'm going to cry. I'm not stupid about technology. Heck, I used to run an entire computer lab for a major university, including all the server components. This should be child's play. I feel like I've got the wrong software on my DVRs or something. What the heck is wrong?

Take a deep breath! Okay! You are almost there. After you choose remote control, look to the right of the screen. You will have IR/RF setup as an option. Choose it. Then you will see IR highlighted. Hit enter and you will see RF, but not highlighted. Scroll down, highlight it, and hit select, then right arrow and enter will take you to the set up screen for the RF controls. Don't you dare give up!.Slow down RQ!
I took a picture of the TV screen. When I select Remote Control, this is what I see: Photo of my TV screen. I don't see IR/RF setup as an option.
