MeTV is Becoming RTV

They have many hours to fill! Wouldn't more "additions" to their lineup only add to the fact that they're doing a better job of retro than other supposedly "retro" channels do?

When there are limited options in programming to offer over many hours, Programmers will burn up shows quicker doing an hour at a time. (like MASH and Hogan's Heroes, and I'm sure, others.) This burns out an audience, even one that likes the shows! I guess I don't see how adding programming detracts from the good variety they've shown us thus far.

RTV is as bad as it is because it lost shows. Someone gaining some of the lost shows is probably a good thing. But I agree with larry1 that this is more evidence that RTV once had a decent lineup. Now though I think the patient is terminal.

And another thing, RTV picture quality is HORRIBLE.... That, in MY opinion hurts them more than their program changes.

MeTV, is fantastic! Picture quality is as good as you can ask for on standard TV and they have an excellent variety of shows. I don't like all of them but there's plenty that I do like. I love MeTV !!

That's just my opinion...

Is it me or is MeTV becoming more like the previous RTV schedule?

Kojak, Adam-12, Emergency, Columbo, Leave it to Beaver, Daniel Boone, The Rifleman, etc.

If this continues MeTV will soon be as bad as RTV is today.

I have to add I wonder if MeTV is licensing the same library that RTV is (or had if RTV no longer has a license to that programming you are referring to).

I suppose with retro shows, there might only be so few number of sources for licensing that any oldies channel may have to license the shows from the same few sources (and probably even have to pay a premium if you are going to license a particular show exclusively and not allow other oldies channels to be able to also license a particular show).

It also stands to reason that both MeTV and Antenna TV, in picking up parts of the former RTV Library, probably are licensing the entire series of many, if not all of these shows, rather than the RTV practice of seemingly showing a half dozen episodes over and over..This has to be a good thing..

One thing that RTV did was show like maybe a dozen episodes of Kraft Suspense Theater, over and over and over and over again and again..... Gaaaaaah!!!
That was a GREAT series and I really wanted to record them all.

I'm so lucky that I got to record the best one ever before they butchered up the picture quality. It was named "Protrait of an Unknown Man" and starred Clint Walker. OMG..... That man.....:heart

They just make em like that anymore.... Sigh.... :)

Dee, which channels are you watching RTV on? I agree the AMC9 signal is pretty sad, and I don't have an S2 box yet so I can't compare those to any others. But remember, they told us those on 83w were just backups for stations who had problems with the main delivery signals, which I guess must be the DVB-S2 ones.

The channels on 83 ku are pretty terrible but so are the channels on 87 C-band. They are S2 on transponder 4080. The resolution is higher than the very low VHS resolution on 83 but it still looks horrible. A picture where there is very little motion is ~ok~ but as soon as someone starts moving the picture instantly goes to poo.. I have read a little about the causes of poor TV pictures and I believe that the reason is that they are compressing the signal to an extremely high rate so that they will save money on the broadcast fees.

Another problem with ALL RTV channels, irregardless of where they are (83 or 87) is that the sound is out of sync by 3-4 seconds!
On my PC I can force it to resync the sound by pressing the rewind button then the FF button a few times. This will usually straighten it out. RTV is the ONLY network that has this sound sync problem.

Now on my Openbox, it seems to handle it without having to play silly games .. My folks have an S9 and the audio works fine for them as well. So it seems that the tuner card in my PC is having a hard time understanding what sort of silly signal they are sending down..

But no matter if it's the PC or the tuner box, C-band or ku, the picture is just flat out dreadful... :(

I have been recording the Yoga shows on RTV (WFXS) on the S2 C-band channel in the mornings so I can watch them later. I time shift because I keep weird hours. When I play them back, they are awful quality and the sound is badly out of sync. And since they are recorded out of sync it appears that there's no way to fix it after the fact. Fortunately yoga is a pretty slow paced activity so I manage to deal with it despite all..

Maybe I can paste up some examples of the horrible quality from C-band..

I sure hope when they get the new satellite in that things will improve. I won't be holding my breath though... :(

RTV suffers from being bit starved. The bitrate is too low to support motion well, and the result on OTA affiliates is an almost unwatchable picture once they apply their compression. Satellite is bearable, but could be much better.

I know, it's free.

I guess I don't get the lack of love for RTV. This afternoon they are showing I Spy, Daniel Boone, Highway to Heaven, Starsky & Hutch,The Saint etc. These were all really big shows in their day. Perhaps Police Story and DeVinci's Inquest (the rest of this afternoons lineup) were not but they are both decent shows (I personally really like DeVinci's Inquest). I am watching I Spy as I am reading this on 87W, 4080H on my S9, Sony 32" and the picture is spectacular. The same is true for the local RTV affiliate (WPSD - Paducah). I do like MeTV as well as it also has a great lineup this afternoon. But I really just don't get the lack of love for RTV.

Tron has it right, with those signals they have almost become dishnetwork SD > sad thing to compare it to, I know.

I watch the Ku RTV feed on 83W and there is definitely not a sync issue for the sound. If you are seeing 3 seconds (even 1 second) of delay, then the issue is on your end.

Yeah! RTV still rocks!!

I still watch RTV and hoping Mr Luken keeps up the battle to have RTV reign as a top quality Retro channel. For now at least! Saturday nights will be MeTv night for the most part.As a side note!I think last sat night RTV finally showed a new Wolfman mac eposode and not a rerun!hope this continues.

I agree, Stanleyjohn, but it's not looking promising around here. Both OTA stations that started out with RTV have now switched to Me-TV. The Huntsvlle station , earlier this year, and now , October, the Birmingham station that carried RTV has switched to Me.
The Bham Fox affiliate has finallly put something different on their subchannel, 6-2 "Bounce TV" . Looks like another This-TV copy, edited movies and such.

I was checking my S10 this morning, I was watching to see why it had stopped recording my yoga program and I was distressed to discover that a GAME SHOW was playing!!

I used to be a fan of Daytime but haven't seen it in a good while. Well, some crossword puzzle game show has replaced it. :(

RTV is becoming TVland.

OTOH, RTV looks pretty decent on a 7" LCD 480i TV. On my 32" 720p Vizio, not so much.

Oh and the new Bounce channel showed up here about the 26th I think. Wikipedi says it is a 24/7 African-American channel.
I found it on OTA by accident on the day they went live. I was scanning to see if MeTV ever made it here onto KUIL.

We have an Azteca channel too so I guess we are getting more like Houston now, channel wise.

I just wish we would get a free OTA weather channel like Houston has.

More channels please!! :)
