Looking for info about how to check a 920 to see if it can still pick up the free stuff on the other birds besides 105w. Just got a free(!) 920 and what looks like an 8' KTI dish today. Want to see what I can pick up once I get the dish put up.

First, i would check to see if the unit ID is still valid. Options, 6,2 line A. Should start with 00-12F*-****-** and receiver number (line B) should match the sticker on the back of the unit. What sat tiles does your receiver have now?

I took a quick look around the menu and didn't see any place to look at what tiles I have available. What button do you push to get to that screen?

I checked and the id that is on the back is the same as where you pointed me within the menus. It looks like someone has already had the battery treatment done, because it has stickers from the electronics company that does the service. I'll probably still pull it apart and check it with my meter (I forget the name and can't check the sticker right now). What I think is bad news is that I see something like 5018 channels in that menu where I checked the id. From what I've read if you have over 5000 you can get some kind of corruption right?

Also, I'd like to get this thing running with both 4dtv and C-band FTA. Sounds like I need to get a Gbox or a Vbox. Saw the thread on the Vbox vs Gbox, I'm leaning towards the Vbox X because I can get one for 1/2 the price of a Gbox. Any reason I should consider something different? I've got a Pansat 2500 and a Coolsat 5000 to use for FTA. I know a lot of stuff is going S2, but I was able to get the Coolsat for $30 and the Pansat for free, so I'd like to see what I can get with this dish before I go after the S2 feeds. Also still need to figure out where exactly in the back yard to put this monster. I've got too many trees!

You do not need a VBox or XBox or anything else to move the satellite dish with the DSR920. Just hook the motor and sensor wires directly to the unit. It will move the dish.

Google search for a manual on the 920. There are plenty of sites to download one.

When you get it all settup and tired of playing with it, then go buy an OPENBOX and the VBox... worth the $$. :popcorn

Great idea on the openbox, but, if you want to save a buck or two, just keep the 920 to move the dish. That is what mine does for my 8 foot mesh and adjusts the polarotor. Nothing wrong with the VBox idea though.

Except that it won't control the polarity servo. With a V/Gbox, you'd have to go with an LNBF or an Ortho feed. Both work, but the LNBF route won't be as sensitive, and the Ortho route would be $$$. Plus, off skew adjustments would be off the table with both options.

A good ole BUD receiver (like the 4DTV) is still a pretty good option... especially if the existing feed has servo polarity control.

Cheers

Ah, so correct you are. I Agree.
