Lets look at it this way. If your team locks up a division title and/or gets homefield, most of the guys dont play in the final week or two anyway, so it might be a 16 game regular season anyway not including the playoffs.

Nah, injuries are just as likely in preseason games.

They should just reduce preseason by 2 games and add 2 regular games. Still for a total of 20 games. This is what they wanted to do this year.

Not when the starters don't play full games it isn't as likely.

I see both sides of the argument. Who wouldn't want more regular season games? I'm the first person to make fun of pre-season games, and the hype that sometimes comes out of them...you know who I'm talking about!!!

But I do worry about one thing...teams who are out of it even earlier in the regular season, and still have games to play. I worry about them giving their best effort.

That said, does anyone know when they're going to add the games to? The NFL always wants to avoid Labor Day weekend, so I'm assuming it won't be in the summer. Are they going to go further into February?

The season is long enough. Its one of the good things about football, it does not drag out forever like baseball or (normally!) basketball, or hockey.

You bring up a good point Sandra. The thing is with the whole "Suck for Luck" campaign, who knows what team is playing hard and what team or teams is tanking it so they can get Andrew Luck.

Very true, and it's not just tanking for a player like Luck. The whole idea of a lot of teams being eliminated but still having 3-4 games to play (games that can decide playoff berths for other teams) is a little unsettling in this sport.

But that's always going to be the case. There will always be teams that are out of it at the end, but are playing games that have playoff ramifications for the opponent and those contending for a playoff birth. You just have to hope that the team with no stake has pride and shows up to play.

The 'Suck for Luck' movement is kind of overrated. It's a sexy headline and fan chatter at this point. He's also supposed to be a once in every 10 years or so kind of player, which if he doesn't do half of what Cam Newton does this year then his value will be debated for a long time. Players aren't going to take the field and give less than 100% put on tape for their next job, or play poorly for coaches and GMs that may not be around next year - or may not keep them around next year. Very few have done that and they're exposed or drummed out of the league with little fanfare as their opportunities to play diminish (I'm looking at you, Randy Moss). Miami is the worst team in the league right now and 3 of their games were decided by less than a touchdown.

Teams that tank can be eliminated by Thanksgiving, doesn't mean that the playoffs should start in December.

True...but it does get exacerbated when teams have two extra games to play.

I think it can work both ways. If the team really really sinks, then yes they will be out of contention long before the two games are played. But, if a team is in the playoff race, it gives them two additional games to make up ground in the standings.

To take two examples from this season, do you think the Dolphins or Colts (assuming Manning doesn't play this season) will be significantly worse in a hypothetical game 18 than they will be in game 16 this year? I don't think so, but I will concede that I have nothing to back that up, it is merely my opinion. On the flip side, maybe the extra two games would give the Eagles more time to make the playoffs and overcome their horrific start. Again, all speculation on my part, but I don't think adding two regular season games will inherently lead to worse play and more meaningless games at the end of the season (unless the playoff teams all run away with their divisions and playoff spots respectively-which seems very unlikely to me).

I guess it all comes down to how those two extra games affect you personally.

As a fan, more meaningful games are always good.
As a player/coach/team & stadium staff, it's more work for just a little more money.
As a TV network, it's more revenue due to these now being 'real' games.

I think they should go to 18 games as well. If your worried about injuries, then tell the teams to play football and try to kill each other. Enforce stricter rules, like the helmet to helmet rule. Get rid of 2 preseason games to make it 18 game schedule. And if your worried about injuries and fatigue and stuff, get rid of the Thursday night game. Just start the week on Sunday, Saturday after the college football season, and have the Sunday night game and Monday Night Football and thats it.
I read somewhere that there will be a Thursday night game every week next season....

And also don't forget the season ticket holders like Dangue and myself, who won't get ripped off for 2 games, only 1.....
