Virginia Tech’s Frank Beamer: ‘I don’t think we have to apologize to anyone’ - Hokies Journal - The Washington Post

Beamer Speaks and speaks facts and the truth... make note of his voting in the polls too!

Virginia Tech football has faced a wave of criticism since it became one of the more unlikely at-large Bowl Championship Series selections of all-time Sunday night, but Coach Frank Beamer was in no mood Monday to back down on his assertion that the Hokies deserve to be in the 2012 Sugar Bowl against Michigan.
When Beamer spoke with reporters in the afternoon, he brought with him two sheets of paper listing the various accomplishments the Hokies have attained in recent years, and he went to them often as he once again defended his team’s merits.
“I don’t think we have to apologize to anyone,” Beamer said. “When you’re the winningest football team since 1995, I don’t think there’s any apologies necessary. When you’re the only team to have won 10 games [eight] straight [years], the only team in the country to do that, yeah, I don’t think there’s an apology necessary. When you’ve been to 19 straight bowl games, I don’t think there’s an apology necessary.”
Beamer didn’t argue that there were other teams who have done enough this season to warrant an at large BCS berth. In fact on Beamer’s final coaches’ poll ballot, which was made public Monday, he had both Boise State and Kansas State ranked ahead of the Hokies. Instead, Beamer said, this is just another example of how the perception of Virginia Tech football has changed of late.
Back in 2000, Michael Vick’s final season as starting quarterback, the Hokies lost just one game and finished ranked No. 5 in the final BCS standings. But Virginia Tech was relegated to the Gator Bowl when the Fiesta Bowl chose No. 6 Oregon State and a two-loss Notre Dame team that was ranked No. 11 in the BCS as its at large selections.
This year, the Hokies finished No. 11 in the BCS and the Sugar Bowl selected them over No. 7 Boise State and No. 8 Kansas State.
“What I really think it says is that our name has changed,” Beamer said. “Several wins later, our name has changed. .?.?. And I think there are always other things involved in bowls. It’s not just necessarily where you’re ranked and so forth. For particular bowls, there’s other issues. But I do think it also says Virginia Tech, how people feel about Virginia Tech.”

Best part about this article is the FACTS that stated how VT was left out of the Fiesta Bowl yet a lower ranked Oregon State and 2 loss ND of a lower rank 11th got in to the at large selections over VT that year ranked 5th!! What goes around comes around ... GO HOKIES!

You just don't get it. After the BCS picks the championship game...its about money and what schools travels well and has a good alumni base nation wide. They have investigation groups for these bowls looking into this. Once they get the pool of teams to pick, that is what they look for.

Teams like Michigan, Ohio State, Florida, Florida State, USC, Alabama, Notre Dame, Texas, Oklahoma...those schools travel well and brings ratings....VaTech just does not.

No I get it just fine.... what I quoted and the article I posted says exactly why VT was picked.... and AGAIN VT was skipped over 10 years ago being ranked 5th. Name has now changed, winningest football team has come into play....eight 10 win seasons straight currently and still running...alot has changed and now VT gets its chance when it was over looked then.

VT Travels and hits the ratings just like the big boys...but had they been paired up against WestVA in the Orange bowl...nope ratings would have taken a dumb cause nobody wanted to see that game - not even me!

Nice read...Changes are coming - love how the SEC AND ACC supported a four team playoff yet the rest didn't but now the Big12 wants it? lol funny

Of course the rest of the article picks on VT..but hey they were screwed the same way in 2000 so what goes around comes around and I think evens the field for VT to get what it deserved then, now.

Maybe we won't need to cross our fingers and toes. The "plus-one" -- a four-team college football playoff -- is under serious consideration in conferences that previously stood firm against any idea of a bracketed tournament. How serious? "I happen to agree with my conference colleagues about the plus-one game," Stanford athletic director Bob Bowlsby said Wednesday. "I think it's inevitable at this point."
Speaking at the IMG Intercollegiate Athletics Forum, several influential athletic directors made a few things clear.
• The plus-one is coming.
• The way we view the bowl hierarchy likely will change.
• The NCAA's approval of up to a $2,000-per-athlete stipend to offset the actual cost of attending a university is the first major step toward a separation of Division I's haves and have-nots, and it could be the first step toward a break from the NCAA by the wealthiest schools.
None of the athletic directors who spoke Wednesday voiced support for a full-fledged, NFL-style playoff, but they did acknowledge the possibility of a change that would allow four teams to compete for the national title at the end of the season. "I was vehemently against it initially," UCLA athletic director Dan Guerrero said, "but I'm a little more open to the discussion as it relates to a plus-one." The fact that two athletic directors in the Pac-12 -- a league long known for its resistance to a playoff -- would concede the possibility of a change is a major step. Monday, Big 12 athletic directors voted to throw their support behind the plus-one. The SEC and ACC supported a four-team playoff in 2008, but they were rebuffed by the other conferences.

Compared to those schools I mentioned, when it comes to drawing ratings, traveling and the such...sorry, VaTech is not in the same categoty.

A perfect example of this is the year before or after Miami played tOSU for the National Championship, they had one loss and FSU had one loss(and FSUs one loss was to Miami), they picked FSU over Miami because though Miami was a bigger ratings getter at the time, FSU has a bigger alumni base in the Southeastern US...AND that school travels better than Miami because in the end, Miami is a small private school where most of their students come from the Northeast...

Sorry I think they are in par with those other schools... I mean YOU think which means you speculate, I think as I speculate but as a avid fan I believe I've seen and heard more of it...but numbers are numbers and ratings have been good over the years or else ESPN wouldn't be showing just about every single VT game every year.

it is what it is..

now moving on - what ya think bout the coming changes? Looks good to me.

As has been mentioned a few times already, they voted FOR IT because they knew the others were voting against it. They were not being "forward thinking", they knew it would not pass.
Ive seen other say it, but I havent seen any proof to back that up.

LMAO! I we will agree to disagree when comparing THOSE schools following and VaTech. As far as ESPN and showing most to all VaTech games. The Hurricanes have pretty been BLAH since 2004..and they show as many games as VaTech. It's a regional thing dude. You live in the NE area, you more than likely will get the VaTech game....you live in South Florida...you will more than likely get the Miami game....

..it's not rocket science....;)

Browns have a VERY good chance at winning tonight against the Steelers, I just saw the uniforms the Steelers are wearing, they NEVER play well when they wear those UGLY unis.

Shouldn't this be in the NFL thread?
