External Hard Drive Archive Bug Thread

This is the only Dish account I've ever had. However, I can't be sure if the Maxtor receivers were ever hooked up to this 722 (it was a replacement for one that went bad a couple of years back).

PM your account number. It's worth a shot to see if we can get them to work without formatting

You're welcome. ;) Been there; done that with a dang (no offense) internal SATA cable. Drove me nuts for two days struggling with various drives, all of which worked sporadically.

BTW, Buy.com has some sales going on EHDs. Almost bought a 2.5TB for $87 until I realized the E* 622 receiver I would attach it to might not handle it as it is over 2TB. Meanwhile a 2TB one from the same line is $102 (??!!??). Oh well, I guess I'll grab the 1.5TB one for $64 as I am close to filling up another one right now.

Also, is there any way to daisy chain multiple drives together that the receiver can see? I tried plugging two drives into USB slots and it burped out an error (I have one connected to a 622 and another 2TB connected to a 722)... If not, a request to E*.... Get it added and you handcuff us to your service as we don't want to lose several hundred hours of archived media. I'm just sayin'.

I was using a ten-to-1 USB hub to DVR input the drive which got plugged into the power strip, which may be unpowered.
One drive powered or one USB wired, only.
Before I was powering all drives and wiring the one to be used, color coded. I decided that's too much powered.
Now I've gone (back) to front-panel USB and plug one power. This works best with the two 722s on at the same time.
Problems: the doors have "broken" off at the hinges from overwork and there is a mess on the floor.
Add to this, I now buy "raw" drives for use in a stand. This would work best if all were internal drives.
In any case, turn off all drives overnight unless one is recording--it delays the reboot up to an hour checking it.

Finally got around to purchasing a EHD for my VIP 211 receiver. The one I chose is the Western Digital My Book AV 1TB USB 2.0 / eSATA Black DVR Expander WDBABT0010HBK-NESN. I have already called Dish to activate the DVR Storage Service on my account and add the one time activation fee of $40 . I also have a 622 DVR on my account so we are setup with the monthly DVR fee. Besides following the instructions for the installation from the Dish website, anything else I should be aware of? The instructions seem pretty straight forward but are geared towards adding additional HD capacity to an existing DVR and not a conversion of a 211. Same instructions for both?

AND A BIG HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO SATELLITE GUYS! @party

Thanks

Never mind my questions, the EHD is hooked up and running fine.

I am trying to get video off my dish vip 612. I have saved files to external hdd. Used linux reader to recover the tsp files. I have tried all posted programs to convert the files none of them work. pvr explorer and dishrip do not work. All video converters stop responding when i open the tsp file.

Sure wish i could get the files off my receiver. Have done all that this forum says will work, and none of it works. There is no program that seems to read tsp files. yet you guys say they will

Reading the available documentation could have saved you a lot of trial and error. The programs you tried don't work with EHD files.

To my knowledge, there aren't any programs that do.

I have been saving programs from my VIP722k HD DuoDVR to an external hard drive (SimpleDrive 500GB). Everything was fine until we had a power outage a couple of weeks ago. The receiver had to be reset, and in the process the hard drive was unplugged briefly (turned off first, per instructions from the manufacturer). Since then, the programs on the external drive seem to be corrupted. About 15 minutes or so into a program, it will abruptly freeze and then forward to the very end of the program. All attempts to replay are unsuccessful. I also tried to move the affected program(s) back to the DVR but got an error message (I'm sorry, I don't remember it). Last night I tried to move a program to the external drive (all programs moved since the power outage worked fine), but was informed that the drive would have to be reformatted. To my knowledge, no other power outages or surges have happened since the one a few weeks ago. Neither the receiver nor the external drive have lost power or been unplugged. Any ideas how I can recover the files on my external without losing everything I've moved over? Thanks so much!

External hard drive

I have a Seagate external (Free Agent, Go Flex Disk)with about 2 TB storage, I have a lot stored on it, but when I plug into my computer's usb, I don't see anything?
I understand that you can only view from a Dish receiver! Is there anyway to convert them so they can be viewed elsewhere?

No.

I just got a VIP722K to replace the 722 that was causing some of my signal strength problems. But now I cannot send any programing to the external hard drive I hooked to it. After you select the programs you want to send to the archive the system just locks up for a bit and then you get an error message saying you have disconnected an external USB drive. I ran into this same issue when I tried to transfer saved programs from the 722 before they replaced it.

Any ideas on a fix?

Well, then, the list of possible culprits includes a bad USB cable, power brick, or the disk or enclosure itself. It seems implausible that two different receivers would have the same symptoms.

Just got a replacement 622 after harddrive failure on my old one. Only have 1 Dish Account and one dual receiver. When I plugged my previously active EHD into my new replacement 622, it wants me to reformat. Clearly that would be heartbreaking after already losing everything on the old 622. Is there a way to re-authorize the external hard disk or otherwise have the new receiver recognize it?

Thanks for any help you can provide and happy Thanksgiving,
Nikki

Send me a private message with your phone number or account number and I can reauthorize it for you. This should get it back up and running

Yep, that La Cie drive turned out to be bad. I hooked it up to my iMac and it recognized it, but when I tried to format it it quit part way through. Then I started hearing very disturbing noises emanating from the drive and that was it. Hooked up another drive and it works fine.

Have had a couple times when I lost connection to the hard drive. Once, even though the usb cable hadn't moved, replacing it worked. The other time, pulled the usb out of the back connection and put it in the front usb and for some reason, that worked. I don't leave the power to the drive on, just powering it up when needed. I think I wore out the first external drive by leaving it on all the time.
