The "new" iPad Announcement / Discussion Thread

No, I believe he means triangulation and timing from the cell towers. I forget the accuracy, but it was considered barely "good enough" for cell phones for emergency services to locate you.

The Wi-Fi only version doesn't have the cellular radios, so it can't triangulate. The 4G version has GPS, so it doesn't have to. Or am I missing something?

The thing is you do not need cellular antennas to use many of the GPS APPs. I turn off my 3G antenna on my iPhone and am still able to use many of my navigation APPs

That's because iPhone has a GPS antenna, so it doesn't need 3G. GPS can work without 3G.

After seeing these posts I looked on my iPhone to see if there is any GPS setting, like there was on my Android phone -- you can turn GPS on or off on the Android, in iOS, it is always on. And there are no setting for it.

The only thing you missed is that I put fingers in gear before brain was fully engaged.

Damned if I know what he meant now.

GPS is actually always off (as it consumes too much power) it is turned on automatically whenever an application requests location services. To disable it completely just turn the location services off.

Hmm! That's interesting!
I see how this Wi-Fi triangulation might work in big cities. But it probably won't be of much help in less populated areas.

Did you hear that whooshing sound?

It was the sound of almost $1,100 flying out of my wallet.

Got it ordered. Boy, those bells and whistles add up quick. And that partridge!

Order said "for delivery on March 16" and I hope that's accurate. I'm sending it to my office. It will be a difficult weekend if delivery is delayed until the following week. Haven't got the confirming email yet, though.

Now- can I keep my big mouth shut until it shows up? I think she forgot there was a press conference today, probably is thinking nothing can be done until March 16. Best not to get excitement built up before then.

I wonder if they're going to set another record for pre-orders?

I installed iPhoto for my iPhone/iPad -- played with it on the iPhone at a meeting, pretty cool. Need to install 5.1 on my iPad first.

Took only about 5 minutes to download to my 4S. Took around 20-30 to download to my iPad 1:(

We can now delete photo stream photos:)
Thanks. Since I can already do these things with my Cydia tweaks, there is really no need for me to upgrade to 5.1 yet until the new JB for it comes out.

New in iOS 5.1:

  • Japanese language support for Siri (availability may be limited during initial rollout)
  • Photos can now be deleted from Photo Stream
  • Camera shortcut now always visible on Lock Screen for iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod touch (4th generation)
  • Camera face detection now highlights all detected faces
  • Redesigned Camera app for iPad
  • Genius Mixes and Genius playlists for iTunes Match subscribers
  • Audio for TV shows and movies on iPad optimized to sound louder and clearer
  • Podcast controls for playback speed and a 30 second rewind for iPad
  • Updated AT&T network indicator
  • Addresses bugs affecting battery life
  • Fixes an issue that occasionally caused audio to drop for outgoing calls

Tried out iPhoto on the ipad 2. Very nice. Runs smoothly. Great application for the iPad.

Bummer that voice dictation isn't on the 5.1 forthe iPad 2.
