Ordered a landline from Verizon today since they are the local provider here. I did that because my town has two prefixes, a very common one and a new one. The only VoIP that has local numbers for me are Suddenlink and Vonage, and they are both the new prefix. I wanted the older one since everyone in town knows it best, and I only know of two people who have local numbers with the new prefix. I'm also wanting to start up an IT consulting business locally and would rather have the very common prefix so that people know I'm local.
Verizon has a lifetime deal for $25 per month for unlimited everything, and a $9 tech fee to turn it up at the pole. I got the number I wanted. As soon as it's installed I'm ordering Ooma and porting it over.

Getting off the Frontier as Suddenlink says in their commercial? I get a kick out of that commercial with them showing the covered wagon rolling.
Wow... haven't heard of the thing of wanting the local exchange in quite a while and I live in a smaller rural area myself next to a metro area. We have 2 landline exchanges here but with all the other phone companies, cable co's, cell phones, etc people don't care and don't even thing about the exchange anymore here.
The small town I live in is made up of primarily older folks and for what I'm wanting to do I wanted to make sure people knew locally by seeing my number it is indeed a local number in town.
I would have had to do this any way for the other exchange since Ooma does not give out numbers for my town at all. Only the cable company, Verizon, and Vonage do.
I've been using the ObiHai 110 box with Google Voice as the carrier. All calls to US and Canada are free through at least the end of 2012. Box costs around $45 on sale. The 110 model will integrate with normal POTS landlines. I still have Verizion for a landline as I was afraid to dump them until I was sure the Obi was going to work for me. Been using GV for all my long distance calls and the quality is great. Trying to convince the wife we don't need the Verizon line anymore.
GV had plenty of local numbers with the normal exchange available here. I ended up with one that's very easy to remember - 5575.

I have voicepulse and think its great. I had AT&T callvantage before that. The one feature that I like most about voicepulse is the call handling. I setup a default rule to send everyone to voicemail, and then an "always ring" rule for "family" and "friends". That way only contacts in my "family" and "friends" groups get through. Everyone else goes to voicemail. They use youmail for voicemail and youmail lets you setup specific answering messages for certain contacts. I have a "telemarketer" group that gets cool hand luke for an answering message.

I haven't had a call from a telemarketer in years. (since setting this up) and I seem to drop from lists now. The overall volume has dropped quite a bit. Although BOA seems to like cool hand luke, lol. I'm not sure why else they would call so much.
I'm ordering an Ooma Telo tonight. Verizon did their part today and I have a local exchange working now. I was chatting with Ooma and I got them to take $20 off the price of a refurbished Telo, and was told the price was good for today. $139 isn't bad.

Activated our Ooma Telo tonight. I got a deal on the Annual Premier for $99.88. I submitted our port request and within 20 min got several emails back. The latter one said it would be done by May 2nd. I logged into our account and it said April 11th is when they expected it to complete.
